State College Answers Timely Farm Questions Exports of rice from Siam to this country have been held up pending satisfac tory agreement on prices and exchange rates. A if Jm ; ! h v lts fi a e s i iol p. fj iiMM. , I v :: QUESTION: Is there any alternative for re-setting hail-damaged tobacco? ANSWER: Yes. Because of the hard, knotty condition of most plants at this late date, it actually may be best to trim the damaged stem with a knife, loosen the :!ht in the row and pile as much dirt around the stem as it will take. This, of course, may be done only if a good part of the stem and the root system remain intact. A stem attached to a good root system will make rapid recovery and a good sucker will soon appear near the soil line. QUESTION: How and when is the best time to take steps to control the cabbage maggot? ANSWER: Right now is the time. A four per cent calomel-gypsum dust, ap plied during the first four days alter the plants are set in the field, is the "how". Right now these flies are laying eggs near the ground level or just below on the stem of early-planted cab bage and cauliflower. These plants tend to wilt on warm days after being attacked by maggots. Dust applications should be repeated every 10 days. QUESTION: Are cattle warts infectious? ANSWER: Yes. Dairy cows with extensive warty growths on the udder or teats should be segregated from the rest of the herd, milked last and handled just as they would be suffering from any other infectious condi tion. Warts of small attach ment mav be successfully clipped off and the stump treated with iodine. In many cases they may be tied off I successfully. If warts are nu- $ merous removal of the grow ths should be supervised by a veterinarian. o Prospects at the close of are that the world will pro duce more food this year than last, but the supply will not equal pre-war output. Getting her family ready for this picture was a long, weary business. The day this photo was snapped, Grandma was up at dawn, wrestling with the old wood stove, coaxing the kettle to boil, cooking breakfast. And the day before, she ironed the mountain of starched clotheg that had needed such hard scrubbing. The day before that- But that was Grandma's life. She didn't know any other kind. Her way of housekeeping took lots of time, lots of elbow grease. In Grandma's gayest dreams she never imagined the time would come when a woman would have dozens of electric servants daily for the cost of a bar of soap. Electric service - ready and willing around the clock and calendar - is a modern miracle Grandma missed by being born too soon. But electrical dependability (and cheapness, too) didn't happen by accident. Not on your tintype! They're the result of plenty of hard work and practical experience on the part of your neighbors who operate this company. Haw NHSON EDDY in "THE ELECTRIC HOUR" with RolMrt Anabrviter'i OrchMtra.
