Cutting hay at the right time
is one of the most important steps
in hay making, but proper curing
of the hay is almost equally as
imx>ortant, according to Dr. R. L.
Loworn, professor of Agronomy
at State College.
Hay should be cured to preserve
the leaves which contain most of
the nutrients, to preserve the na
tural green color, to avoid dam
age from rain or dew, and to a-
void damage from mold, the
specialist said.

If rain falls on freshly cut hay
there will be little damage, pro
vided good curing weather follows.
Half-cured or well-cured hay
will be discolored, but will not
mold if rain comes before it is
raked up. The greatest "damage
is done to hay in the windrow,
or in loose, irregular piles. Such
hay should be spread out as soon
as the weather will permit, he

Flans for pushing the devdop'
ment of North Carolina’s commer
cial livestock industry as one
means of offsetting a possible de
cline in revenue fromi tobacco ^.are
being mad^ by the State Depart
ment of Agriculture foUov/ing a
meeting of Eastern North Carolina
producers and market operators
interested in the program.
Representatives of the depart
ment and the State College Ex
tension Service met in Rocky
Mount to discuss the problem with
livestock producers, business men,
county agents and market opera
tors from about 10 eastern coun
ties. ,
They heard Thomas J.* Pearsall,
speaker of the State House of
Representatives and largte-scale
farm operator, foresee a decline
in farmers’ revenue from tobac
co in years to come. Pearsall told
the group that commercial live
stock production offers the best
solution to the problem when to
bacco income hits the skids. He
warned agaiiist undue delay in
starting increased livestock pro
duction, saying he believed the
peak in tobacco income already
had been reached.
Reports indicated a growing de
mand for female beef cattle in
Eastern North Carolina. This
means, said Marketing Specialist
Robert S. Curtis of the Department
of Agriculture, that farmers al
ready are preparing to increase
commercial livestock produiction
in preparation for the predicted
drop in tobacco revenue.
In addition to Curtis, agricul
ture officials at the meeting were
Randall Etheridge, chief of the
department’s marke^ts division,
and L, I. Case and Jack Kelly of
the Extension Service. Cecil Jack-
son, agricultural agent for the At
lantic Coast Line Railroad, pre
sided.
This means, he believes, that
conditions, with a few possible
exceptions, will also be satisfac
tory.
Explaining his reasoning be
hind sUch a prediction, Dr. Fors
ter says that farm prosperity de
pends almost directly on the con
dition of the national economy,
Therefore, a close relationship
exists between the prosperity of
farming in North Carolina and
America’s industrial activity.
As Dr. Forster sees it, this in
dustrial activity will remain high
during the next several years,
and as a consequence, the agri
cultural income of this state will
remain in a favorable position.
