PATTON AND THE PEDIGREED
LIEUTENANT
(A post war anecdote)
Beside General Patton at the
dinner table sat a gentleman from
Virginia, a typical So-uthern Col
onel of the old school, complete
with goatee and flowing white
■hair. . ^
The general, who had put in
a long day reviewing troops at|
Fort,.. Benning and welcoming a
contingent of officers , newly ar
rived from'West Point, was weary
and famished; his ' only interest
at the moment was to dispatch
a succulent steak which had just
been set before him. But the Col
onel was feverishly interested in
something else—the'futdre of his
son, one of those fledgling offi
cers.
As Patton strove to get busy
with knife and fork, the colonel
kept plucking his sleeve and be
laboring him with information a-
bout the youhg man’s blue-bl-ood-
ed lineage and other aspects of
family (background calculated to
fit him for a brilliant military ca
reer. After the General had made
several false starts at that allur
ing stsak, the veins on his fore
head began to stand out ominous
ly. "‘Indeed Sir”, the colonel cried,
mounting to a climax of paternal
enthusiasm, “my son can trace
his ancestors back to the May
flower, not only on my side, but,
on his hiother’s side! Why Sir—”.
