There are parts of North 'America through which men can trcivel a
thousand miles by canoel But not all of the journey is easy paddling on
glassy lakes, or lazy drifting before friendly cun'ents. There ore choppy
rivers and swirling rapids. And when the river becomes un-novigable,
or the lake ends . . . there is always a "carry."
A "carry" isn't easy. You have'to shoulder your duffle-packed craft"
and make your way slowly overland to the next stretch of water. You have
no choice in the matter^ . > you must make the "carry" or you can't go on.
Life isn't much different than a journey by canoe. There are "carries"
'that must be made if we ore to go on. A man can't escape the burdened
miles that are part of his journey.
