RfarUng “the beginning of a new era in Naval weapons,” the United States Navy fired a captured Ger man V-2 rocket from the flight deck of the 45,000 ton aircraft carrier USS Midway on September 6, 1947. This was the first time in history such a bombardment rocket has been launched from ships or a moving platform. The primary purpose of the experiment, held at sea several hundred miles off the East-Coast of the United States, was to ascertain if large bombardment rockets could be fired off modern aircraft carriers without modifications affecting flight operations. Rainey, wife of Dr. Rainey and Miss Hilda Blount, Student Nurses chairman of social activities poured coffee. Dainty sandwiches and cookies were served to the sixty guests. Both Miss Maxwell and Miss Miles were presented with cor sages. OVER NEWS-JOURNAL The Nurses Home was attrac tively decorated with a profusion of chrysanthemums in pastel shades. The table was covered Among the guests invited were the^ students of the hiigh school interested in nursing, to whom an invitation was extended by the President of the Student Nurses Council, when Miss Maxwell ad dressed the High School member ship Monday morning. Represen tative of other nursing units pres ent were Mrs. Pegran^ of the Red Cross, andjhe Chief Nurses of the Veterans’ Hp^itpl^hd from Fort Bragg. Mrs. Currie, wife of Dr. Currie, of Paricton and OVLrs. O’Briant, wife of Dr. O’Briant of Raeford were the out of town guests.
