THE NEWS-JOURNAL j r^ the tahk of the toffee stops '' ■ M State College Answers Timely Farm Questions QUESTION: What is the most desirable weight lor butchering hogs? ANSWER: While it is true that hogs can be killed over a wide range of weights, nevertheless, hogs weighing from 200 to 300 pounds will generally prove most satisfactory for use oq the farm. Heavy hogs generally yieldi a ii^all: df. higher percentage df.lard. Care should be taken to select hogs that are well fattened out and that are free from disease. Hogs should be taken off feed at least 24 hours before slaughter al though they should have free ac cess to all the water they will drink. Removing the feed be fore slaughter facilitates Shaughtering and results in a better bleed. Hogs should be handled quietly to pre- vent_them from becoming 'excit ed and over heated. MEMBERSHIP CAMpJuGN .CLOSES WEDNESDAY All Hoke County Farm Bureau membership committeemen are requested to turn ^in their mem bership books by Wednesicay, Nc- ve.mber 26, according to an an nouncement by R. E. Neeley, pres ident of the Hoke Unit. Mr. Nee ley says that the' county goal has not been reached. It is short of the goal by 150 members. He believes that the goal could have been obtained if ehqu^ leaders had put a few extra hours of time toward writing members. A large membership is especially desirable now as many problems now facing farrn people will be solved^through an organization such' as Farm Bureau, he said. Every farmer owed it to himself to back tbiis working organization with his membership. 1 0 Dark' lamp shades absorb light. ANSWER; Extension Dairy specialists at State College say, if a calf is doing well at the end of the second week the whole milk can be gradually replaced with skim-milk. The change from whole milk to skim-milk should be gradual at the rate of about one pounid: per day, requiring eight to ten days to make it com plete. If thg calf should show i '*1 syrQptoms of scouring while the ^ change is being made, delay any further substitution of skim-milk ' A for whole milk until these symp- to.ms disappear. All foam should be removed from the skim-milk before it is fed. The daliy allow ance can gradually be increased until the calf-iis receiving sixteen to twenty pounds at six months of age. At this age, skim-milk may be'-^'iscontinued from the calf’s oration. However, on farms where it is plentiful, it may be fed to advantage up t(j^ eight months of age.
