MECHANICAL INSPECTION DIVISION
DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES
STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
RALEIGH, N. C.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
I
October 10, 1947.
i
Dear felIo\v North Carolinans:
9
I
0
, With the passage of the compulsory mot^'vehicle mechanical inspection law, the
Departinent of Motor Vehicles has been making extensive plans to put the program into
effect. We have purchased'testing equipment to be installed at each of the 40 safety
inspection lanes, and we are now in the process of interviewing and hiring competent
personnel to man these stations. Your cooperation is needed to miake the program a
success, and we hope that every citizen will feel that his State is performing a great
service in helping to keep cars in safe operating condition.
* '' * »
The program, will go into effect January 1, 1948. Shortly after that' time, some of
our safety lanes will begin operating, and as soon as possible thereafter all 40 will be
gin operations.
V . .
The Department urges upon all- you vehicle owners the necessity of taking your
car or truck to an inspection station as soon as the one in your area opens. During 1948
each vehicle must be Inspected only once, but it will be very unwise to wait until the
end of that year to visit your inspection lane. We advise you to go early and avoid the
rush. The inspection of each vehicle will take a short time—only about five' td" ten
minutes; and it is not necessary that the car-owner appear at the station. The vehicle
niay be driven by any. licensed operator.
Our inspectors will only inspect your vehicle. THEY WILL NOT MAKE REPAIRS.
That must be done by outside garages and repair shops, or by the car-owner himself
if he has the ability. In order to save yourself unnecessary incbnvenience, I would
suggest that you'have yoUr vehicle in as good condition as possible before visiting an
inspection lane. i. '
The law was designed to cut down on North Carolina’s ^appalling toll . of highway
accidents and facalities. It was passed for your own safety and well-being, so let us all
work together to niake the program a big success. - -
' ' V Very truly yours,
L. C. ROSSER, Cdhimissioner.
