RAEFORD, N. State Colkge QUESTION: Is priming recom- mmded for burley tobacco? ANSWER: S. N. Prim ing a part of the tobacco enables the -producer to save the bottom leaves before they become over ripe and let the rest of the plant remain in the field until it has become fully ripe. In recent meetings, burley producers have been very enthusiastic about the idea of increasing the Quality and yields of their tobacco by prim ing once or twice and then cut ting the stalk.” The killing pf both bills in the Senate and the ^ouse to give the people a vote on the sale of alco hol was not allowing the . people a say so in that thing, nor was it democratic. ment on the minds of his hearen with a ridiculous anecdote. QUESTION: Is self-feeding re commended for fattening hogs? ANSWER: Yes. Dry feed is pre ferable ito slop because it helps to prevent digestive disorders and saves labor. The self-feeder met hod is the best way to feed fat tening hogs, because it saves both feed and labor. It is also an ideal way to utilize dry feed, it helps keep feed clean, and it enables each pig to select its own ration free choice. When nursing sows are self-fed, the pigs learn to eat from' the feeder before weaning time. When the, sows are taken away the pigs will continue on the self-feeder without interrup tion and with littld or no setback from weaning. The way the General Assembly has treated the Drys for the past ten years shows they have not a bit of use for any such people ex cept that want their votes. Vance reminded the coxmtry of how the Gongrdss was wasting the people’s money by a joke. An old colored man went fishing and caught a very large catfish. As he fished^ on, he ^ept, and young fellow came along, and he, having caught a batfish about four inches long, took the old man’s big fish, and left his small one. When the old man awoke, he pick ed up his fish, looked at it a long time, said, “is dis my catfish? After wondering a good while, he concluded, '“yes, dis must be my catfish but how he has swunk.” Public money swinks, ^—"m WUUt from nm and said ! i ended therp,': siftted to a commitie^ As I look back, 1 1 had several iiarrow ercapes, but they say a miss is as good as a mile. from my county sent me a'bill to intr^uee and have passed by the Legsilature of 1929, and to expedite matters, I asked that the bill be put upon its sev eral readings rather than through a committee, but before the Speaker could speak, the gentle- I was reminded efJ'INtt inci dent a few days afst, Mutt. ANSWER; Regular models now on the market run from four to 18 cubic feet in capacity, but it is possible to buy a chest freezer as small as a 1-2 cubic feet or big 60-cubic fpot model. As rough guide, an average of five or six cubic feet for each person in the family is suggested. How ever, the choice depends a great deal on the way the freezer will be used. A city family, using it mostly for storing commercially frozen food and ice cream, may need only one or two cubic feet per person, whereas a farm fam ily, freazing much of its yearly supply of home-produced food, may need 10 to 12 cubic feet per person. A cubic foot holds about 30 to 35 pounds of food. It is bet ter to overestimate on size than to underestimate. The trend of de mand in both freezers and refri gerators is, to ward larger sizes be- cau.se families are coming to ap preciate more and more the ad vantages of refrigerated and frozen storage for food. ' More over, the larger freezers cost less per cubci foot. 0 Sweet Potato Seed Crop Is Certified The North Carolina Crop Im provement Association has ap proved 7,463 bushels of sweet potatoes, all of the Porto Rico variety, for certification as seed, according to Foil McL^aughlin, re search instructor in agronomy at State College. More than a third of the total certified stock was grown in Johnston County, where 2900 bushels passed the final bin in spection. Columbus County was second with 1120 bushels, and Duplin was third with 875 bushels. Other counties producing more than 200 bushels of certified seed included Harnett, Pitt, Gates, Wayne, Carteret, Craven, and Anson. Potatoes were rejected on only six of the 25 farms where inspec tions were held, as compared with a much higher percentage of rejections last year. Not a single lot of seed stock was rejected this year because of black rot storage disease. McLaughlin says black rot has been eliminated largely because certified seed growers are using vine cuttings instead of sprouts or plants. The disease does not attack any of the above-ground parts of the sweet potato plant. Another storage disease, inter nal cork, caused one rejection. A total of 32 farmers began production of seed potatoes last summer, but seven were eliminr ated during the growing season because wilt was found in their fields. - ¥ , hoM easy ft isto oMn Mm X i''- j'- '1 % Did you know that Maytag prices actually start as low as $124.95?
