AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY MEETS WEDDING BREAKFAST FOR BRIDAL PARTY SENIOR GIRLS ENTERTAINED Mrs. Bert Brown, Mrs. Herbert McLean and Miss Reba Roberts entertained the American Legion Auxiliaib'’ at its regular meeting on Monday evening, at the Roberts home. Mrs. A. D. Gore presided in the absence of the president, Mrs. Younger Snead. Much business came up. Plans were made to de corate the graves on National Memorial Day and to sell pop pies on May 28. Mrs. Bob Staley, who with her husband, Sgt. Sta ley. have an apartment with Mrs. C. H. Giles,, was then introduced to the auxiliary. Mrs. Staley, who is blind, made a most interesting talk on the eye-seeing school in New Jersey and other phases of her education. She read an ex cerpt from. “Cheaper by the Dozen” out of her current Read- er\ Digest printed in Braille. She is a bridge enthusiast and had with her a deck of Kern cards in Braille. After the meeting ad journed the hostesses served re freshments. 0 FRIENDS ENJOY OF UPCHURCH HOSPITALITY Many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Upchurch accepted their nivitation to a fish fry Fri day evening. This was to have been held at Clyde’s pond but on account of inclement weather was changed to the Upchurch airport. Tables with seats for the large number present were placed in the hangar. The supper was ser ved buffet style, and it was a most delicious and generous one. Fish, i cornbread, hush puppies, potato salad, slaw, coffee and cookies were served. Plates were replenished and cups refilled with steaming hot cof£ee. That the oc casion was a most happy one was evident by the enthusiastic com ments made by all present. A wedding breakfast, appoint- The girls of the senior class of ments of “which were lovely ii^^Hoke High school were guests of the Business, and Professional Women on Tuesday evening for supper. Tables were placed ban quet style in the high school lunchroom. Gladioli and other spring flowers were placed in at- tractice arrangements down the length of the tables. Each sen ior’s place was marked with a dainty nosegay, also favors for each, a box of note paper. Mrs. Retha Howell Ashe wel comed the girls an dintroduced /ach one to the assemblage. Miss Bettie Benner responded for the seniors. Miss Louise Blue intro duced the business women. Each woman responded with a short talk, telling what business and pro fession she was in. Mrs. W. R. Barrington, soloist, and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, accom panist, were introduced. A delicious supper in several courses was served under the di rection of Mrs. Lucy Smith. After supper a contest, “Penny For Your Thoughts,” was most entertaining. Miss Hilda Jordan won the prize for giving the most correct answers. n every detail, was given Saturday morning in honor of the Peele- Wyly bridal party by Mrs. Law rence McNeill. A variety of gar den flowers, attractively arrang ed were used in the living room and hall. The dining room table, covered with a cutwork cloth, was center ed with a beautiful bridal arrange ment of all white flowers. Tables seating four each were placed in living room and dining room. These were centered with minia ture flower arrangements of var ied hues. The bride’s place was marked with a nosegay of white rosebuds anl a gift of silver in her pattern; other places were marked with bridal markers. The delicious breakfast was served buffet style. There were twenty present. These were the briday party and members of the two families, out-of-town guests, and their hostesses. MRS. K. A. MACDONALD CLUB HO.STESS NEIGHBORHOOD DINNER PARTY Mr. and Mrs. Julian Blue, Mr, and Mrs. Younger Snead, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence. McNeill, Mr. and Mrs. Neill A. McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Foreman of Eliza beth City were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Thomas Saturday evening. A very deli- cious^ meal was served at eight o’clock with covers being laid for twelve. GLEE CLUB PLEASES CONGREGATION The Flora Macdonald Glee club, under the direction of Dean Rue- ter, delighted the congregation at the Presbyterian church on Sun day evening. Miss Mary Raye Freeman of Raeford was soloist. After the chiuch service the girls were served sari^Swiches, punch and home made cake by the Pres byterian Seniors. There were a- bout eighty young people present. —1 0- BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENTS WYLY — PEELE On Saturday afternoon after the Wyly-Peele wedding Mrs. Ken neth MacDonald entertained her bridge club. Mrs. R. A. Matheson and Mrs. Tommie Upchurch were those present in addition to club members. Mrs. Marshall Thomas won the club high score and Mrs. Upchurch the visitor’s prize. The hostess served a most tempting salad plate after , the game. 0—^ LAURINBURG FLOWER SHOW , A general invitation has been given to flower lovers in Raeford and vicinity to attend the flower show which will be held in Laur- imburg. May 5th and 6th. This show will be held in the Presby terian Hut and is'isponsored by the Scotch Gardeners. Lovely arrangements of spring flowers and potted plants decorated the home of Mrs. Senter. Upon arrival the honoree was presented an all white corsage. Two tables were arranged for bingo and prizes were given the winner of each game. Several contests were also enjoyed with prizes going to the winners. Mrs. Warner was presented' a gift of crystal in her chosen pat tern after which refreshments were served. 0 ^ DINNER PARTY FOR WRINGER OFFICIALS Mr. and Mrs. William Lentz announce the birth of a .daugh ter, Elizabeth Jean, Friday, April 22, at Moore County hospital. Mrs. Lentz was the former Miss Ailene Edwards. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pope an nounce the birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Anne, Sunday, April 24, at Moore County hospital.. Mrs. Pope was formerly Miss • Clara Byrd of Burlington. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Thomas gave a very lovely dinner party Friday evening honoring the offi cial personnel of the Wringer Company, now vacationing at Highland Pines Inn, Southern Pines. The President of the com pany and his wife and Mr. and Mrs. George Keltie and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fontaine, all of Woon socket, Rhode Island, were the guests of Mr. .and Mrs. Thomas. These Rhode Island people 'were most enthusiastic in their praise of the South and Southern hospi tality, especially , that extended to them in Raeford. 0 BARBECUE AT, STEVENS FARM The pastor and family and all officers of the Raeford Presby terian church and their wives were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Ste vens and Mr. and Mrs. Kerr Ste vens on Tuesday evening. They gathered at the pond on the Ste vens farm and were served a long-to-be remembered barbecue supper with all the things that go with it to make a delicious meal. It proved to be most de lightful occasion jand one that was marked by good fellowship. 0 WEDNESDAY CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. GIBSON The Wednesday after noon bridge club was enterainel last week by Mrs. W. T. Gibson. A dessert was served before the game to the club members pre^ ent and to Mrs. Colon Scarbo- ough. a guest of the club. Mrs. T. B. Lester recei\cd the club prize for making hi^h score, Mrs.' Bill Howell was given a consola tion gift for low score and Mrs. Scarborough was remembered with a gift. —: 0 SHIRLEY MANN HONORS GUEST Miss Muriel Kramer of Wal lace, week-end guest of Miss Shirley Maim, was honoree at a weiner roast given by Miss Mann last Friday evening. Gar rett of Roxboro announce the birth of a son, William E. Jr., Saturday, April 23. Mrs. Garrett was formerly Miss Almeade Gen try. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ellis, a son, Robert Edward, April 12, at Highsmith hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bullard an nounce the birth of a daughter, Dorothy Magina, Saturday, April 23. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Campbell of Charlotte a son, Robert William. Wednesday, Ap ril 20. y-, Edward McGirt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edison McGirt, was taken to Pittman hospital yesterday morning with pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Oliver Wyly, who were mai'ried Satur day afternoon, stopped in Colum bia. S. C. for Slipper en route South on their wedding trip. While they were having supper someone broke into their car and stole all Mrs. Wyly’s clothes. Mrs. Lewis Upchurch has been quite sick with flu all' of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch attended the informal reception given by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bul lock in Maxton on Wednesday afternoon of this week. This was the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Bullock. The marriage of Miss Nancy McNair Peele, daughter of E. L. Peele and the late Mrs. Peele of Raeford, to Francis Oliver Wyly. son^of Mrs. Julia Parker Wyly of Mdntreat and the late Rev. Wil liam J. Wyly of York. S. C.,' took place Saturday afternoon. April 23, at 3:30 o’clock, in the Rae ford Presbyterian church. Rev. H. K. Holland, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, assisted by Rev. W. B. Heyward, performed the dou ble ring ceremony. Altar decorations were simple and tasteful airangements of flowers in all white with ferns. Miss Alice Walker, organist, played a prelude of nuptial mu sic. Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, by Wagner was plyaed as pro cessional, To A Wild Rose and O Perfect Love, during the cere mony and Wedding March by Mendelssohn as a recessional. Escorted and given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a pink tailored suit with matching accessories. She carried a white satin prayer book, marked with a white orchid showered with white satin streamers. Mi;s Mary Peele. sister of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore a suit of navy blue with matching accessories^ and a cor-, sage oLpink roses and forget-me- nots. The Rev. H. K. Holland of Marietta, Georgia, was best man. Ushers w'ere Jepetha Peele of Greensboro and Jim Williamson of Raeford. Immediately after the ceremony an informal reception was, given at the bride’s home. Mrs. Tom Cameron directed guesits to the dining room where 5liss Mattie Peele served punch assisted by Mrs. J. L. McNeill. The dining room table had a centerpiece of white flowers with lighted candles on either side. Mixed garden flowers were used in living room and hall. The couple left for a short wed ding trip before going to their future home in Montreat. The bride wore for travel a blue suit with magnolia trim and all navy accessories, and white orchid cor sage. Mrs. Wyly attended Mon treat college and Vassar Brothers Hos pital where she graduated in 1945. Since then' she has held a position at Moore County hospital at Pine- hurst. Mr. Wyly attended ^ Biltmore Junir,r college and University of Kansas. He was a member of the armed forces and spent three years overseas. He now' holds a position with the Mountain Re treat Association in Montreat, w’here the couple will make their home. Out of town guests for the wed ding w’ere Mrs. A. D. They were accom panied as far as Thomasville, Ga. by Mrs. June Johnson and child ren, who will vi.-ut relatives there while the men are in Florida. They will return to Raeford Sun day. Mrs. George Freeman and Mrs. H. A. Freeman wish to express their thanks to the Raeford folks for their kindnesses and interest shown them during the recent illness of their mother, Mrs. M. C. Long of Laurinburg.
