'i J) X y pr. - ■'i i FESTIVITIES FOR BRIDES-ELECT LAUNCHED . , ; , Mrs. A. K. Currie and Miss Leoi|ora Ciirrie were the first of the friends in Raeford to enter tain for Misses Faye Baker and Elsie Upchurch, whose approach ing marriages were recently an nounced. Mrs. Currie and Miss Currie gave a beautifully appointed come an sit tea at theif home on Sat urday afternoon. One group came from four to five, the other from five to six. They were welcomed by the hostesses and the others in the informal receiving line, who were the honorees, Miss Baker and Miss Upchurch, and their mothers, Mrs. Walter Baker .and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch. Corsages had been presented to these four on their arrival by the hostesses. Those calling were seated in the living room and den before being invited into the dining room by Mrs. Luke Bethune. Here Misses 'Peggy Bethune, Phyllis Baker arid Hilda Jordan served a party plate on which was a col orful salad with dainty accessories. Punch was served by Misses Mol- lie Cameron and Shirley Blue. Thfe arrangements of garden flowers in the living room, den and dining room were pretty and effective. The dining room table was covered with a lace cloth. The punch bowl on the far end was screened by an oblong ar rangement of pastel rosebud^ in V a bed of pink and green maline. Crystal baskets holding sweet heart roses were at the opposite end. Nuts, individual decorated cakes and pastel mints were in silver and crystal containers on the table. At the close of the^ second''hour Miss Leonora Currie presented her honor guests with Silver com potes. She also gave Mi^ Bennie Lee McGougan, bride-elect, of Lumber Bridge a piece of cran berry crystal. NANCY BRAY CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Nancy Bray celebrated her 4th birthday last Thursday with a party given at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Bray. About 15 of Nancy’s little friends were present and enjoy ed gamest during which time pic tures were taken. Punch, ice cream and cake were served. 0— Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Dalton spent the week end at Marion and Lake James. BRIDE-ELECT HONOREE AT SHOWER IN FAYETTEVILLE On Thursday evening ,of last week, Miss Ollie Stephens, bride- elect, was honors, at- a ' party given by Miss Myrtle Oakley and l^s. William Cain, at the home of the latter at 214 Dick Street, ip Fayetteville. - , Upon arrival Miss Stephens Was presented a lovely coinage. During the evening a number of bridal games and contests Were enjoyed with prizes goihg to the winner of each. The climax of the evening was reached when .the hostesses and guests present presented the hoimree with a shower of lovely and useful gifts. Refreshments consisting of punch, cake, nuts and mints were served. Those going from Raeford were Misses Sarah and Marguerite Stephens, sister of the honoree. • J— 0 PICNIC SUPPER IS FOLLOWED BY BRIDGE Mr. and Mrs. Neill A. McDonald anl. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Blue en tertained about twenty friends last Friday evening at the .Mc Donald cabin near Timberland. The guests arrived at 5 P. M. and enjoyed a delicious hot supper served picnic style on long tables laid out doors near the out door grill. L After supper everybody went inside where tables were arranged for bridge. There were four tables in play. The couple hold ing the highest score was award ed the prize, whicli was a beau tiful potted hydrangea. Dr. and Mrs. Murray held the highest scores. ' Everybody had a good time, enjoying the,! informality of the occasion and the gracious hospi tality. y i COUPLES CLUB ENTERTAINED WEDNESDAY NIGHT . The couples bridge club was entertained on Wednesday even ing of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles- Morrison. At the end of several progress ions tallies were totaled and high score ptize went to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Muench. Neil Senter, low scorer, was consoled with a prizei Mr. and Mrs. Herman Vernon and Mrs. Hubert Wooten were visitors other than club members. Ice cream and cake was served the game. 0— TEACHERS ENTERTAINED MRS. HOWELLS, CLUB HOSTED Jkffrs, BiU kowell was hostess to the Wednesday afternoon bridge club last wefek. Mrs. Marcus Smith and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch were guests other than club mem bers. Mrs. Robert Gatlin was high score winner and she also captured the floating prize. Mrs. Upchurch won the guest prize. Mrs. Howell served a dessert course soon after the, guests ar rived. 0 - , Marion Gatlin, J. C. Wright and W.. J. McQuage left Sat- imday for Hot Springs, Arkansas, -to spend this week. North CuoUns The teachers of Alice Sutton Matheson ^nd Marian Lewis^ who are members of this year’s grad uating clhss were entertained in a most delightful manner Wed nesday p. m. Mrs. R. B. Lewis and Mrs. R. A. Matheson were hos tesses, entertaining af the Math eson home. A delicious turkey dinner was served at card tables where covers were laid &r six teen. Flowers in pastel shades in minature containers centered each table and places were attractively marked. After dinner many games were played and prizes were a- warded Mrs. Arthur D. Gore,'K. A. MacDonald and Miss Doris Bradley. Those enjoying this hospitality were Miss Doris Bradley, Hay wood Faircloth, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr., Mrs. J. C. McLean, Miss Miriam Watson, Jim Turlington, Miss Mary Mc- Innis, Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Mac Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur D. Gore, Dr. R. A. Matheson and R. B. Lewis. Mr. and;, Mrs. W. ,Tj Gibson were not, present as. they were out of town for the week end. -i MISS STEPHENS HONORED AT - McNEILL HOME Miss Ollie Stephens, whose iriarriage took place Sunday af ternoon, was shown ah attrac tive bridal courtesy when Mrs. J. K. McNeill and Miss Sarah Ella Conoly entertained at the McNeill home, Wednesday even ing of last week. Attractive arrangements of mixed spring flowers were used in the living and dining rooms where four tables were arranged for rook. After the end of sev eral interesting progressions scores were totaled and high score prize went to Mrs. Harvey Cole., Mrs. Clyde Upchurch captured the floating prize. Miss Stephens was presented a lovely corsage on arrival and was later given a plate'and several pieces of silver In her chosen pat tern of chipa and silver. Miss Milcfrcd Campbell, bride-elect, was also presented a corsage and a piece of silver in jier pattern. At' the end of the evening the hostesses, served ice cream, cake nuts arid mints. May 8, at four in the afternoon, the mar riage of Miss OUie Hinton Ste phens anl Cheurles Joseph Augus-; tom, Jr. was solemnized at the home of the bride. The bride’s pastor, the Rev. P. O. Lee, per formed the ceremony. The vows were spoken before" an improvised altar placed just in front^ of the living room mantel. Tall palms were used for the background on either side, with an ei^ankmen| of ferns in the center. Th4 mantel was banked with white gladioli, lillies and trailing white, jessa mine. Making A semi-cirile from this background were wrought iron branched candelabra inter twined with star jessamine. Each held seven lighted tapers. White floor baskets ^jfith white gladioli and lace fern completed the ar rangement. The beauty of this was enhanced by the reflection in the mantel length mirror. Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, pianist, played a prelude of nuptial music and Miss Elsie Upchurch sang, “Through the Years.” and “Be cause.” The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore an off white wool gaberdine suit with grey accessories and a pur ple throated orchid pinned on her lapel. Miss Marguerite Stephens, sis ter of the bride, was maid of honor. She wore an oyster white suit with pink accessories and carried pink carnations and fern. The best man was Sergeant Lantz of Pope Field and ushers were James Stephens, brother of the bride, and Kenneth McNeill,, a cousin. Following the ceremony an in formal reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Ste phens. Mrs. T. F. Alexander of Raleigh directed guests to the dining room where they were served wedding cake by Mrs. M. H. Markham of Raleigh and punch by Mrs. John K. McNeill. All three serving were aunts of the bride. Miss Sarah Ella Cbrioly presided at the register. During the reception a recording of “Be cause”, made by the groom’s sis ter was softly played. The couple left for a trip to New. York. The bride wore a pink ribbon suit with grey accessories and her bridal corsage. The bride is the second daugh ter of Mr, and Mrs. C. L. Steph ens. For several years she has held a most responsible position at Fort Bragg, being supervisor of the department making para- chuVis. The groom is the son of Mr, and Mrs. Charles Augustoni of New York City. He is now stationed at Pope Field. Out-of-Town Guests Among the out-of-town guests here for the wedding were: Mrs. T. F. Roberts entertain ed her bridge club Saturday af ternoon at her home on the Fay etteville Road. Arrangements of spring ^wexs in pastel colors were used in Mrs. Roberts* living room. At'the conclusion of the games Mrs. Arthur D. Gore was awud- ed hi^ score prize and Mrs. Arab G. Stuart received bingo^ prize. Mrs. Roberts served a delect able salad coiirse. SHOWER FOR RECENT BRIDE Miss Louise Limdy entertained at the home of ^ her parents for her friend, Mrs. Hieodore Cher ry, recent bride, last Friday evening. Abouir twenty-five fri ends of the honoree' were guests at this affair and they pgave the bride a shower of miscellaneous gifts. After refreshments were served Mrs. Cher^’y was blind folded arid was presented with gifts by Bobby Lundy. She had to guess what they were. Sh6 re.- ceived many pretty and, useful gifts. Mrs. Cherry, the. former Miss Rowena Meeks, daughter of Chief of Police and Mrs. Meeks, arid Theodore Cherry were married in Chesterfield, S. C. April the 25 and are making their home with the bride’fe parents while ^he is stationed at Fort Bragg. Mrs. Alfred c^^Ie enterfained on Saturday for .Miss Faye Baker, whose marriage to Riley Jordan will take place the last week in Jime. Williams underwent an appendectomy at the Scotland County Memorial hospital last Wednesday. She expects to re turn home this week. Mrs. Thomas Davis, who was visiting relatives in Elkin for the week end, was taken to an Elkin hospital where she underwent an appendectomy Sunday morning. W, T. Gibson spent the week end in Roxboro.
