McGOOGAN »SHOWERS THE BRIDES-ELECJ After so very many parties in their honor Misses Elsie Upchurch and Faye Baker thought there could hardly be anything new un der the sun, but just that was left fof Mrs. John McGoogan to have. On Friday evening at eight o’clock Mrs. McGoogan entertained 16, these being special friends and immediate members of the two farhilies of the honorees. Punch was served at the beginning of the evening by Mrs. Archie Howard and the girls served themselves later on. Four tables were arrang ed for progressive hearts. Nose gays marked the honorees places and score cards carried out the bridal motif. In the game Miss Jessie Bright Ferguson made high score and Miss Leonora Currie won the floating prize. Mrs. McGoogan then read an invitation in rhsnne which -invited the girls into the sim room. Here was the surprise and “the new under the sun.” Two lafge pots, one in one Comer and one in another were literally filled with kitchen gadgets and utensils. Each pot of gifts was a gift from the hostess to Elsie and Faye. Attached to pretty aprons in the pots were loose leaf recipe books; the first recipe was: How To Preserve: Love, and the sec ond, How To Make a Home. There were many wrapped packages ‘containing a number of things. Whep these were,unwrapped the girls put them in decorated orange crates to take home. The girls were enthusiastic over the shower and Mrs. McGoogan’s hospitality. 0 HOKE-DUNDARRACH luncheon honors MISS UPCHURCH IN RALEIGH TUESDAY The following invitiohs have been issued, but everybody is ex pected to be at this wedding; in vitation or no invitation.. Miss Madge Coble, who was a patient there. Miss Coble returned to her home near Liberty Sunday and Mrs. Poole came back to Raeford Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Cothran en tertained at luncheon Tuesday at the Cblonial Pines Hotel honoring Miss Elsie Upchurch, bride-elect of Raeford, whose marriage to Robert Samuel McCleskey will take place on July 8. , The centerpiece was a flower arrangement of pink and white gladioli in a silver bowl. The pink and white color scheme was car ried out in place cards and mint cups. , A corsage and a gift of silver in her pattern were presented Miss Upchurch. WILLIS AND MISS bAker honor THEIR COUSIN Mrs. Harvey Cole was hostess last Wednesday evening when she had some of her close friends in for a most delicious summertime supper. Covers were laid for 12 at three tables on *he porch. After supper the guests played the games of their choice. There was one table playing bridge, one rook, and one set back. Those enjoying Mrs. Cole’s hospitality were: Mrs. Belton Wright, Mrs. J. B. McLeod, Mrs. Kate McPhaul, Mrs. Carlton Niven, Mrs. Johnny Hinnant, Mrs. Irvin Stanton, Misses Sarah and Marguerite Stephens, Jessie Bright Ferguson, Grace Carter. Louise Blue, Sarah Conoly. B&PW CLUB MEETS The Raeford Business and Pro fessional Women’s club held their regular monthly meeting at the Hoke High school lunchroom Tues day evening. Mrs. C. H. Giles, president, presided over the bus iness session during which time she and Miss Louise Blue made reports on their trip to Atlantic Beach last week end where they attended the annual convenion of the B&PW club. 0 Mrs. J. H. Austin has returned from Charlotte where she under went a major operation at the Presbyterian hospital. Miss Katherine Baker of Ashe- boro and» Mrs. Clarence Willis honored their cousin. Miss Faye Baker, on Saturday afternoon with a delightfully informal coca-cola IJarty. This was given at the home of Miss Baker’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Baker. The honoree and Miss Elsie Upchurch • were given a corsage each of gardenias which they wore. Mixed summer flowers were tastefully used in the rooms in which the girls gath ered. Coca-colas with many tempt ing accessories were served and the hostesses presented Miss Baker a gift of china and Miss Elsie Up church a gift of crystal. 0 COUPLES CLUB ENTERTAINED The couples club was entertain ed last Tuesday evening by Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr. There were three tables in play with Mr. and Mrs. Archie Howard, Misses Mollie Cameron and Miss Agnes Mae Johnson, guests other than club members. Miss Mollie Cameron won ^he guest prize, Neil Senter the club prize for men and Mrs. T. B. Lester, club prize for ladies. A most refreshing ice course was served after this game. — 0 MISSES UPCHURCH AND BAKER SHARE HONORS AT LUNCHEON Covers were laid for twelve at a very lovely luncheon given by Mrs. A. L. O’Briant on Thursday at one o’clock in honor of Misses Elsie Upchurch and Faye Baker. Corsages marked the places, of the brides-elect and other places were marked with bridal cards. The twelve seated at the tables were: Miss Elsie Upchurch and her mo ther, Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Miss Faye Baker and her mother, Mrs. Walter Baker, Mrs. J. F. Jordan apd Miss Hilda Jordan, mother and sister of Miss Baker’s fiance, Mrs. Tommie Caulk, Mrs. Clyde Upchurch. Jr., Miss Phyllis Baker, Miss Mildred Oliver. Misses Mol lie Cameron and Leonora Currie. A delicious coure luncheon was served. After lunch there were three rounds of bingo, with Misses Phyllis Baker, Hilda Jordan and winning the prizes. Mrs. O’Briant Miss Mildred Oliver winning the prizes. Mrs. O’Briant gave Elsie and Faye gifts of silver. Miss Mildred Ohristeen Camp bell. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel James Campbell, and Al fredo Tolar. Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo - Tolar of Lumber Bridge, were united in marriage in a candlelight ceremony Satur day evening, June 25, at eight- thirty o’clock in the Raeford Pres byterian church. The Rcw tVill- iam B. Heyward, pastor - ft the bride, officiated. Miss Alice Walk er, organist, and Robert Gatlin! soloist, presented a program of wedding music. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore an original gown of white slipper satin, featuring an off-shoulder bertha with a marquisette yoke. The sleeves tapered to calla lily points over the hands. Her bouf fant skirt extended^ into a circu lar train, and her finger-tip veil of illusion fell from a bandeau of satin. She carried a cascade bou quet of white summer flowers centered with a purple orchid. Mrs. Glen Collinson of Opa Locka, Florida, was sister’s only attendant. She. was attired in a gown of aqua taffeta, fash ioned similar to the bride’s. She , carried a nosegay of mixed pastel shades, and wore flowers in her hair to match. Little Miss Pat Currie, cousin of the bride and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Angus Currie of Red Springs, was the flower girl. She wore a dress of pink taffeta, and carried a basket of mixed sum mer flowers. Tommy Mercer, young son of Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Mercer of Lum-berton and cousin of the bride, was ring bearer. Stewart Tolar of Maxton was his ^brother’s best man. .Ushers were Dan Campbell, Jr. of Opa Locka, Florida, brother of the bride, Tomrriy Tolar, brother of the bridegroom, Jimmy Conoly and Jim Maxwell. After a short wedding trip' the bridal couple will make their home in Red Springs, where Mr. Tolar is employed. Mrs. Tolar will continue her work with the Bank of Raeford. Since the announcement of this engagement Mrs. Tolar has been the recipient of many social cour tesies. These began with a lovely party by Mrs. Ed McNeill and Mrs. R. B. Lewis at the home of Mrs. L^wis and cotitinued up to the day of the wedding. The final pretty affair was the: CAKE^CUTTING Mrs. John Walker, Mrs. A. L. O’Briant and Mrs. W. B. Heyward entertained the wedding party im mediately following the rehear sal Friday night. This was at the Manse, the living and dining rooms of which had been made lovely for the occasion. An all white flower arrangements was on one end of the dining room table with lighted candles in three branched crystal candelabra. The beautiful three tiered wedding cake was at the far end. After the bride and groom elect cut the first slice the cake was served with ice cream in. wedding bells of green and white. About thirty were pre- serft, these being the members of the wedding party, the family and out-of-town friends. -r-0 COCA-COLA PARTY AT MRS. MARIAN GATLIN’S LUNCHEON HONORING MISS FAYE BAKER One of the pretty affairs honor ing Miss Faye Baker was the luncheon given at Hotel Raeford the day before her wedding. At this time Mrs. M. T. Jordan of- Fairmont, Mrs. Charles Randall of Kinston and Miss Hilda Jor dan were hostesses. The luncheon was served at 1 o’clock in the pri vate upstairs dining room and was a most appetizing meal. Cov^ ers were laid at Small tables. Each table was centered with mimature brides’ bouquets grouped togeth er making a lovely centerpiece. At the conclusion of the luncheon each guest was giyen a bouquet lifted from the centerpiece as a favor. Miss Baker’s corsage, the gift of the hostess was a very lovely one. She was also given a gift of silver. The guests list included mem bers of the wedding party and the immediate family. They were: Miss. BRIDES-ELECT HONORED BY MRS BENTON THOMAS Mrs. Benton Thomas honored Misses Elsie Upchurch and Faye Baker on Wednesdays afternoon with one of the prettiest of the informal parties given during this truly “bridal .season.” About 20 guests, including Miss Mildred CampbeU," bride of last Saturday evening, very close friends, and immediate members of the fami lies of the honorees were invited for five o’clock.. Mrs. Thomas’s livir^.room was cool and inviting and unusually pretty with ar rangements of beautiful garden flowers. The dining room table was cov ered with a full length cloth and centered with all white flowers. White candles., lighted, were in three branched crystal candelabra placed diagonally on the table. The din ing room table was covered with a cloth of Irish linen cUtwork. White glads, white roses and snap dragons with lace fern and gyp- sophiia made a centerpiece. Party sandwiches, confections, salted nuts and other dainty accessories were placed on the table and the guests served themselves. Iced coca-colas were served.
