RESUMES MEETINGS BAPTIST YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE PARTY The Literature Department of the Raeford Woman’s club held its first meeting of the' year on Tuesday evening at 7:45 at the home of Mrs. W. T. Gibson, with Mrs. Marcus Smith and Mrs. E. H. Robinson serving as assistant hostesses. Mrs. Marcus Smith, chairman presided. After the roll was call ed and minutes of the last meet ing were read and adopted, Mrs. Smith announced that the dis- drict meeting would be held in Fayetteville, Wednesday, Septem ber 28, and asked for a large re presentation. During the business session hostesses were appointed to help with the X-ray, clinic to be held in Raeford this month. Mrs. A. L. O’Briant, program chairman, gave an outline of the year’s work. Mrs. Paul Dickson, Jr. and Mrs. W .L. Howell, Jr. had charge of the program for the evening/ Mrs. Dickson, m a most interest ing manner, gave an illustrated talk on art appreciation, while "Mrs. Howell had for her topic, “■World Masterpieces.” At the conclusion of the pro gram a social hour was enjoyed during which time the hostesses served delicious refreshments. —0 BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR MRS. B. R. GATLIN MISS WHITLEY HONORS BRIDE-ELECT , The Young People’s Training Union of the Baptist church held a very clever party in the base ment of the church last Friday evening. This was for the boys and girls of'the church, who are leaving for collejge but the coll ege groups from the other church es were invited. All decorations were sugges tive of the different colleges; pennants, crepe paper decorations on walls, poles; and windows in college colors, etc. The table on which the punch bowl and other refreshments were placed was most attractive. The punch bo\yl at one end was in a nest of green ery with yellow chrysanthemums. In the center of the table was a toy truck laden with “luggage.” fop' those leaving for college. Mrs. L. W. Turner and the Rev. Mr. Lennon directed the games, which proved to be most interest ing and entertaining. « 0 REUNION AT BENNER’S POND Members of the Gatlin family gathered at Gatlinwood last Sun day for a family picnic. It was in honor of Mrs. B. R. Gatlin’s 83rd birthday and the occasion proved to- be a most happy one; for Mrs. Gatlin is young for her years and enjoys these get-to-gethers. The children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her many pretty and useful presents. The entire family welcomed Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Carver and son, Jimmy. Mrs. Carver is the form er Miss Frances Jfean Freeman. The Carvers, who have been living in Samsun, Turkey, flew to Istanbul, Turkey, thence to Brus sels, and then to New York, mak ing visits of several days in each place before coming to North Carolina. They are dividing their visit between Mr. Carver’s home in Durham and Mrs. Walter Free man, Mrs. Carver’s mother, in Aberdeen. 0 MISS, JOSEPHINE McLAUCHLIN HONOREE Miss Josephine McLauchlin is having many . social courtesies shown her before her wedding which takes place next week; On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Lewis Upchurch and Mrs. Marcus Smith entertained at the Up church home in Miss McLauch- lin’s honor. This w’as a delightful but informal gathering. Friends and relatives of the honoree came in at 4 o’clock and enjoyed an hour of conversation with coca- colas and many delectable acces sories. These refreshments were arranged and served in a most attractive manner. Mrs. Upchurch gave her honored guest, crystal and Mrs. Smith presented her with a piece of silver. DINNER FOR MISS McFADYEN Mr. and Mrs. Clarepce Lytch gave a very lovely family dinner I on I'ilonday night to which the ! members* of the immediate fam- i.ily of Mr. and Mrs. William Mc- Fadj'en and Mrs. J.^W. McLauch lin were invited. This ^was in honor of Miss Christiana McFad- yen. bride-elect of this month. Covers were laid for ten at a beautifully appointed table. The bride-elect’s place . was marked with a dainty corsage and she was given a piece of silver. O- Miss Mary Hazel Whitley en tertained with a dinner followed by rook and bridge in honor of Miss Josephine McLauchlin on Saturday evening. Covers were laid for sixteen Favors were lapel vases with pas tel flowers. After the delicious dinner, three tables were arrang ed for bridge and one for rook. Mrs. Kerr Steyens won the prize in rook and Miss Josephine Mc Lauchlin in bridge. The hostess also gave Miss McLauchlin a piece of china in the pattern she has- selected. ^ !—0 ^ PRESBYTERIAN YOUNG PEOPLE ENTERTAINED On last Friday night the young people of the Raeford Presbyter ian church were entertained by the Women of the Church. This was in honor of those who are leaving soon for college. A deli cious supper was served in the Undercroft of the Church. The welcome was extended by Jane McKeithan, president of the Youth Fellowship, and Eleanor Leach responded on behalf on the college students. After dinner Lewis Upchurch, assisted by Lewis, Jr., gave a program of magic tricks. •0 MRS. HOWELL WINS PRIZES Mrs. Bill Howell won the club prize as well as the bingo prize, at the meeting of the Wednesday bridge club last week. Mrs. Bill Lament was hostess. She served a dessert before the game. Those playing were all club members. MISS MARTHA SYKES MARRIES LELAND JONES IN RALEIGH Miss Martha Charlotte Sykes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney recessional. In an impressive candlelight ceremony at four-thirty o’clock in the afternoon of, August 28th at Page Memorial Church in Aber deen Harriet Eliabeth Jones, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Roy A. Jones of McCain, and James Matheson Davis, Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. James M. Davis of Wadesborcipwere united in marri age. The Rev. J. T. Whitehead, pastor of the church, officiated. Prior to the ceremony, Mrs. E. L. Pleasants at the pipe organ presented a program of nuptial music. Miral3ni Johnson of Ashley Heights, soloist, sang a group of appropriate selections. , Immediately following the wed ding music, to the strains of Lo hengren’s Wedding March,, the ushers entered and" took their places at the altar, followed by the bride’s attendants. The ushers were James Reid of Raleigh ^nd Richard Jones of iMcCain, broth er of the bride, Wil'rar Tinder and James Seawell. all of Mc Cain. Mattie Wallace of Pine- hurst was maid of honor, while Mrs. James Reid of Raleigh, sis ter of the groom, and Grady Louise Covington of McCain were bridesmaids. They wore identical white satin dresses and carried bouquets of red ctarnations. Their head dresses were of chenille and tiny white chrysanthemums. Little Betty Baker of Durham cousin of the bride, was junior bridesmaid.. The bride entered on the arm of her fahter who gave her away. Her gown of ivory satin was fash ioned with bodice and long taper ing sleeves and an overskirt of Chantilly lace and her hand made finger tip veil was held in place by a coronet of pearl orange blos soms. She carried a bouquet oi white roses and her only orna ment was a string of pearls, a gift of the groom. The-bride was met at the altar by the bridegroom attended by his best man, Charles 1. Allen, Jr., of Wadesboro. The impressive double ring ceremony was used, during which “To a Wild Rose” was softly played. Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was used as a Mr. and Mrs. S, W. Morris ot Gastonia spent the week end with home folks at Montrose. Mrs. John M. Baker of Cameron announces the engagement of her daughter, Miss Marvin Ruth Gil- lis to Henry Martin Khngen- schmidt, son of William H. Klin- genschmidt and the late Mrs. Klingenschmidt of Vass. A. Matheson was hos tess to the senior bridge club at its regular meeting on Friday evening. There were two tables in play, all club members. Pelmn Sykes of Raleigh became the bride of Leland Lake Jones, Jr., son of Mrs. Leland Lake Jorges and the late Mr. Jones of Wil mington, in a ceremony Satur day afternoon, September 3, in the Westminister Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. The Rev. R. D. Ca^'son, pastor of the bride, officiated. The altar was decor ated with palms and candelabra. A program of wedding music was presented by Miss Barbara Thompson, oragnist, and Miss Helen Bland, soloist. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a dress of aqua silk crepe. The dress had a fitted bodice covered with Venice lace of the same aqua. The skirt fell in full unpressed pleats. The sk v-'t fitted jacket had collar and cuffs of the Venice lace and but toned at the waist with tiny self crepe buttons. She wore match ing accessories of aqua and car ried a satin Bible popped with an orchid and roses. -0- MRS. GORE HOSTESS Following the ceremony a re ception was held at hhe Nurses’ Home at McCain. Guests were met at the door ’oy Mr. and Mi's. Floyd Eubanks and introduced to the receiving line by Mrs. J. S. Hiatt. The receiving line was composed of the parents of the bride and bridegroom and mem bers of the bridal party. Miralyn Johnson presided over the re gister, and the guests were invit ed to the dining room by Frances Davis of Wadesboro, a sister of r . the bridgegroom. Mrs. O. B. Israel cut the cake, after the bride and groom had cut the first slice, and Mrs. H. S. Willis presided over the punch bo\^l. Others assisting were Miss Carrie Toomer. Mrs. Wil bur Tinder. Gore was bridge hostess last Wednesday afternoon when she entertained her club. Two tables were in play, with Mrs. R. A. Matheson and Mrs. Herbert McKeithan as guests other than club members. Mrs. R. L. Murray won the club prize and Mrs. McKeithan the guest prize; Mrs. W. W. Roberts captured the bingo prize.. A sweet course served after the game was most refreshing. An interesting feature of the afternoon was when Mr. Gore made recordings of conversation with each one present, unknown to her. These conversations were then relayed, causing much mer riment. 0 Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Dew of Charlotte spent the week end here with Mrs. M. W. Dew and Miss Kathleen Dew, and they spent Sunday at White Lake with Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Hatcher, who have a cottage there. Mrs. H. C. GuUedge and Miss Martha Ben GuUedge returned Tuesday after spending Sunday and Monday at Greenville. They went to take Miss Nita GuUedge who will be a sophomore at ECTC this year, and Joe GuUedge, Jr. who will enter his freshman year at ECTC. of the bride and only attendant, wore a dress of burnt amber and matching accessories. The bride is a native of Hoke County, being a niece of Misses EUza and Bessie Love. Her mo ther was the former Miss Ina Love. She attended Hoke High School and later Peace college. She now holds a position with the State Department of Revenue. The bridegroom is now attend ing the University of North Car olina and is a member of Lamda Chi Alpha Social fraternity. The couple will make their home in Chapel Hill. Misses EUza and Bessie Love and Annie McMUlan of the coun ty went to Raleigh Friday, and attended the rehearsal, wedding, and reception. 0 Mrs. NeiU A. The bride was a member of the* ^Class of ’45 at Hoke County High School. She attended Duke Uni versity two years and King’s Busi ness, College a year. She is now a member of the business staff in , the office at N. C. State Sanator ium. The groom is an alumnus of Wake Forest College. After serv ing in the Navy two years during the War he attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and is now Laboratory Technician at N. C. State Sanatorium. After September 10th the cou ple will be at home at McCain. !\ ■* Mr. And Mrs. DeWitt Tapp and family have moved into their new home, which is located back of the Legion Ball Park. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Lewis and two child ren have rented and moved into the house vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Tapp at Timberland. Mr. Lewis is connected with the Para-Thread Company, and he and his family came here from Talledega, Ala bama. but he is a native of High Point. N.
