THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1949 Socials-Persorval Items ... THE NEWS-JOURNAL ATTEND GROUP CONFERENCE PAGE MISSES TAPP ENTERTAINED ON THURSDAY EVENING. On Thursday evening Misses Brooks and Frances Tapp, very popular brides-elect of October 9th, were honored by three or ganizations of their church. The Gleaners Sunday School class, the Lottie Moon Circle and the Business Woman’s Circle of the Baptist church enteretained in their honor at the home of Mrs. Paul Burnett. Mrs. Burnett’s home, had un usually pretty flower arrange ments. Beautiful roses and milk and wine lilies were effectively used in living rooni and spider lilies with greenery in dining room. The honorees were given all white corsages on arrival and late in the evening were presented with crystal- in the patterns they have chosen. After an hoiu" or more of con versation and interesting contests, frozen lime punch was served with a variety of dainty sand wiches. cookies and mints. All ap- pj^tments and refreshments car ried out a green and white motif. EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT MEETS COUNTY MEDICAL AUXILIARY MEETS WITH PRESIDENT MISS COLE, BRIDE-ELECT HONORED ^ M^ss Nancy Lee Cole, whose marriage to Jimmy Conoly will take place Sunday. October 16, was shown an attractive courtesy when the members of Methodist, Youth Fellowship entertained on Monday evening at the home of Miss Iris Thomas.. An hour or so was spent in in formal conversation after which Miss Cole was presented with a shower of miscellaneous kitchen gifts by those present. At the end of the evening pink and white ice cream and ca'ke were served. BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Hubert McKenzie announce the birth of a son, Thomas Hubert, Friday, Septem ber 16, at Moore County 'hospital. Mrs. McKenzie was the former Miss Mary Thomas of Humber Bridge. 0 Mrs. Joe Gulledge is spending some time in Fayetteville in the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. "W. 'Will iamson. Mrs. Gulledge’s stepmo ther, Mif. 'Williamson, fell recent ly and broke her knee, and Mrs. Gulledge will be with her until she is able to walk again. Mrs. Tom Cameron, Mrs. Lewis Upchurch and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch were hostesses to the Educational Department of the Woman’s club at its first Fall meeting Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr., new chair man, presided, with Mrs. Neil Senter, new secretary. Several matters of business were discussed and dispensed with before the program of the after noon was turned over to Mrs. Paul Dickson, Sr. The subject of the afternoon was on gardens. Mrs. Dickson made practical sug gestions from her own experience in planning and planting a per ennial border now'. She listed per ennials to be had this fall by colors and heights. For back grounds azaleas and camellias were discussed as this is also the time to plan and plant these shrubs. Mrs. Marion Gatlin was next on the program with subject “Old Gardens of the South.” She chose Middleton :and Magnolia Gardens near Charleston. Mrs. Neil Senter read Mrs. Gatlin’s paper as she was unable to be present. Mrs. H. A. Cameron, told of the beautiful Rock Garden on Mount Lookout, near Chattanooga, Tenm which She had visited and showed pictures. Mrs. Robert Gatlin gave the names of flowers commonly mispronounced. This meeting was at the home of Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, which was most attractively arranged for the occasion. Fall flowers, in pastel shades, were effectively used, being placed on mantels and tables. The dining room was especially pretty and arranged formally, as for a tea. The table was covered with a linen embroidered cloth having lace inserts and centered with a pillar arrangement of flo wers flanked by candles. Mrs. Tom Cameron poured Russian tea and the guests served themselves from the table. Party sandwiches, tidbits, nutty cookies, mints and nuts were placed on the table. Many members of the club were present. They were enthus iastic about the Coming year’s w^rk and appreciative of the hos pitality shown them at this meet ing. Mrs. Mary McBryde and grand daughter, Pamela Ann Smith, spent Sunday in Liberty in the home of Dr. and Mrs. K. B. Griin The Hoke County Medical Auxi liary was entertained last Thurs day evening by its president, Mrs. A. L. O’Briant. At seven 'o’clock a delicious dinner was served with covers laid for Mrs. A. L. O’Briant. Mrs. G. W. Brown, Mrs. R. L. Murray, Mrs. R. A. Mathe- son of Raeford, Mrs. 'Willis, Mrs. Byrd, Mrs. Reese, Mrs. Peck, .Mrs. Hiatt, Dr! Lynn Johnson of Mc Cain and Mrs. Marcus Smith, guest of the Auxiliary. Dr. Johnson made a most in teresting talk on the McCain bed at the Sanatorium which was es tablished and endowed by ' the Auxiliary. She told who had oc- Mrs. H. C. McLauchlin, presi dent. and Mrs. Neill A. McDon ald, secretary, are attending the Group Conferences of the tVomien of-the Church, Fayetteville Pres bytery this week. Tuesday they were at McMillan Church. Har nett County, Wednesday at Church of the Convenant. Fayetteville, and today at the Presbyterian church at Red Springs. A number of Presbyterian women from Rae ford attended the conference in Fayetteville Wednesday and will go to Red Springs today. 0 O. E. S. HAS INITATION CHICKEN SUPPER AT AIRPORT The Raeford Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star had its re gular semi-monthly, meeting Mon day night. Mrs. Harry Greene. Worthy Matron, presided. Mrs. James Byrd was initiated into the Order. Mr. and* Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr. entertained Monday evening in a way that many parents Lke, especially during the cotton pick ing season. They gave a fried chicken supper* at the airport to which they invited their close friends and told them to bring the children. This affair, which proved' to be a most enjoyable one, .was in honor of Mrs. Up church’s sister, Mrs. Malcolm Col lin and two children, who are the house guests of the Upchurches. 0 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mrs. Marguerite Pearson, Mrs. cupied it since its establishment T. C. Sinclair and Mrs. Fred and of contributions made to it by others than the Auxiliary. After this talk and business al ters were dispensed with, tables were arranged for bridge and rook. In the rook game Mrs. Byrd made high score and Mrs. Peck in bridge. Both were given prizes. 0 MRS. Mr. and Mrs. James Tillman. 15 guests were invited and arrived at 4 o’ clock after which they played games and took pictures. They were served birthday cake, ice cream and c&ndy. 0 The Raeford Woman’s club was well represented at the meeting of the Ninth r&trict held in Fayetteville yesterday. The meet ing was in the First Presbyterian church and lunch was served at Qsb Fayerteville Woman’s home on Dick slreet. Mrs., Paul Dezerne was hostess to her bridge club Thursday even ing of last week. Mrs. W. T. Gib son, Jr. was- the -only guest other than members.. At the end of sev eral interesting progressiorrs high score prize was awarded to Mrs. T. B. Lester and Mrs. Arch Gra ham captured the floating prize. Giles were hostesses. They had decorated the hall beautifully for the occasion, using both giant and dwarf zinnias and marigolds. An ic-e course with cake and nuts was served. 0 Mrs. Chnrles Augustoni of Al bany, Georgia, arrived Sunday for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Stephens, while Sgt. Augustoni is attending a gunner’s school at Elgin Field, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Hartman Yarbo rough of Columbia, S. C.i an nounce the birth of a daughter, Brenda Joyce. Monday, Septem.- ber 19. 0 Mrs. J. H. Blue is spending this week in Fairmont. J. W. Staley and Mrs. Staley, who have had an apart ment for sometime with Mrs. C. H. Giles have moved to the Honeycutt Section of Ft. Bra^. They made many friends while in Raeford and ■ Mrs. Staley and her seeing eye dog were familiar to all the townspeople. Rev. and^Mrs. Wallace Ellis have returned to their home in Richwood, Ohio, after visiting here for 10 days. While here a reunion of close relatives and a few friends was held at the ho.me of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Ellis. Everyone brought a picnic bas Mrs. P. O. Lee has been quite sick this week. Covington. Milton Mann came home from Duke last week to spend the Jew ish holiday. The Mann family went to Fayetteville and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stein for the celebration.
