v; i. Y '■■•;■-■■ m THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17,1949 THE NEW£MOUBNAL Poole’s Medley BY D. SCOTT POOLE "We believe our form of govern- ment is the best known to hum anity, for our government has done more for humanity than any oth er coimtry. We call it a democracy. All Americans, that is, true Americans, boast of what their country has done. That is why we love it. November 11th was Armistice Day. Thirtyjone years ago, after those Americans had broken the Hindenberg Line, the Germans asked for a negotiation of peace terms. The United States has acted the Big Brother to almost all the countries of the world. Showing brotherly love is Christianity. In the early days when the op pressed peoples of the world found refuge in the New World, they promised to allow everybody to worship God as they so desired. Communism is something new in America, tout as an organiza tion it has grown fast and is a real threat to, both Christianity and democracy. Our attitude should be, as the Lord will, so should our wills be. We know the Lord wiUs no harm to ^ny, imess they bring judg ment upon themselves through selfish desires. , If he who makes two blades of grass grow where one grew be fore is a benefactor, he should try to get in on cockleburrs. If there is any good in Bermu da grass, nut grass or cockle- burrs, we are the wealthiest folks in America, or equally as rich as any. If anything eats either we have not caught them at it. How ever, the Highway Commission finds use for Bermuda grass to stop washouts on the highways. The men who stop washes with Bermuda grass sould be made to dig up all there is in Georgia and South Carolina. Either a dog or a cat knows how to be friends with those who are kind to them. In that they are ahead of some people. The settlers of the west think they are laoger and superior, and they may be better in some ways. However, they deserve no credit. The best educated person is he who makes the fewest mistakes, and to know, and to know that you know is the answer to who knows. The difference between inter est and discount is, you pay $6 discount on $100 and get $94. In case you pay interest, you get $100 a year and pay $106. It was found that notes given in payment for debts before the adoption of the North Carolina constitution in 1868 did not de bar the collection of debts made before or during the Civil War. Against such debts there was no statute of limitation, it seemed, and caused distress to many. GIVE WALLS AND WOODWORK with ACME QUALITY SEMI-GLOSS FINISH DRIES SATIN-SMOOTH! That was an awful war, but it lasted a little more than half a year after the Americans entered the battles. ASK FOR THE i ACME QUALITY LABEL Johnson Cotton Co. OF RAEFORD INC. The Germans and Allies had fought back and forth three times before the Americans entered the war. The United States was not prepared to enter the conflict, but they crossed the Atlantic in the spring and really entered into battle where the Germans had driven the Allies to within sight of the English Channel. Some of the returned American soldiers told their rtelatives that the French told them as they were going in, “Oh, you have come too late.” But they went into the fight and stayed there, fought and died, and held their ^ound imtil the Germans withdrew from the battlefield. I hate war but the. Americans have proven themselves the best warriors in the world. They have no equals. I have mentioned why Europe has not come back since the war, and the reason is their countries are ruined by bombing. The fer tile soils have been stirred into the earth out of reach of grow ing crops. The first world war was bad enough, but If possible, the second was worse, and it cost more. The second World War cost one tril lion and one and two-fifths bil lion dollars. Aralna News By Mrs. D. B. Traywicq Rev. W. B.
