THE NEWS^OEENAL THUBSDAT, DECEMBER 22, 194» ■^^1 I I I- p:h^: State Cdl^e ^wersTmiely Farm Queetions ' “?k?' pi- QUESTION: How can slugs and. snails be controlled? t**# ANSWER: The favorite haunts of slugs and snails are damp or moist places under or near ac cumulations of decayed vegeta tion or rubbish, piles of old boards, bricks, and stones, and doise, low-growing vegetation. Tbey also are found in basements and drain pipes and on rough stone walls and well walls. Thus it is important to keep the base ment and spaces beneath porches dry and the garden and green house clean and free from rub bish, old boards, bricks, and like materials, which offer protection to the pests. Painting-up founda tion walls and the walls of dug wells also is an aid in control. When snails or slugs have be come established, the U. S. De partment of Agriculture recom mends that a poisoned bait con sisting of one oimce of metalde- hyde to three pounds of wheat bran, slightly moistened, be scat tered over the infested area. Sometimes fairly good control can be obtained by the use of a bait consisting of one part of cal cium arsenate in 16 parts of bran, moistened and scattered about a garden or other places where it may be used with safety. Both metaldehyde and calcium arsen ate should be used in the bait I i We want Santa to relax a minute and take the quick convenient telephone way to send you bur very best wishes for the happiest of holidays.
