C., under the Act of March 3, 1870. Voas Road Situation Disappointing The news this week that; the Army would be unable to surface treat the Raeford-Vass road through the F6rt Bragg reservation is disappointing to people on both sides of the reservation, as this had looked encouraging and was being looked forward to as a means of bringing closer to the rest of the counW a township which has been widely separ ated from it for many years. As we understand Mr. Deane’s letter, the Army wants to fix up two gulleys in the road in return for the release of an easement held by the county for the use of the road by the public. This would put the road’s use by civilians entirely at the discretion, or even whim, of whoever the conunanding general at Fort Bragg might be in the years to come. While we won’t commit ourselves against this release, we do urge the county commissioners to give the matter very careful consideration before agreeing to it. , 0— *■ told today of seeing the new 1950 line in a special pre>view show ing held this week In Norfolk,Va. which is the Frigidaire district headquarters for this territory. Mr. Niven is very enthiuiastic over the line for 1950, and he states that the home appliance buyers will find this well known brand offering the utmost in value in all new models. The new mod els will be arriving soon at Bau- com Appliance Co. who have been authorized Frigidaire dealers since 1936. Movie Tomorrow For March Of Dimes End of the Public Library Question The question of moving the Hoke county public library to the High school campus ended this week when the county board of education withdrew its offer of space in the con templated building there. This, as far as we have been able to make out, was in accord with the wishes of most of the people in the county, although we haven’t made a survey. By way of ending it properly we want to straighten out an impression evident in our editorial of last week which we have since learned was incorrect. That is the idea that getting the library would help the school get the building. School authorities say they will get the building anyway. TO THE EDITOR: MAKING SPORT OF THE CHURCHES . It is very noticeable in the con versation of many of our people and mostly Church people, they joke and jocky each other about their churches and denominations, and instead of r^uking such practices some minis^s take part in those things, thus perhaps unintentionally encouraging such practices and making sport and laughter of the churches. tenderness they are joking and making laughter of the body end bride of Christ, doing so perhaps without proper thought and con sideration, and ’are making a ser ious mistake. We must admit that it is displeasing to God, and it is to be hoped that our good minis ters will rebuke and discourage such practices. E. M. Smith, Raeford, N. C. The church was instituted by our Lord and Saviour and is a very sacred institution, indeed so sacred that our Lord said that we should enter with thanksgiving and praise, and when we enter into conversation or in any other way relative to the church it should be in the most humble and respectful way. The Lord also said that it was His body and His bride thus indicating the relation ship of the church to Himself, and when people joke and make laughter with each other about their different churches and de nominations to my mind, and I say this with all due respect and STATE TAX MAN HERE TOMORROW L. H. Parmele, district deputy collector of the North Carolina department of revenue, will be in Raeford at the courthouse to morrow from 10:30 a. m. to 2:30 p. m. to answer any questions and to assist anyone who desires it with completing their state in come tax return. ■ J LOCAL MAN ATTENDS FRIGIDAIRE CONVENTION Carlton E. Niven, of Baucom Appliance Co., local dealer for the Frigidaire line of home appliances. Robert Gatlin, Raeford chair man for the March of Dimes which has been extended through February 15, announced this week that J. B. McIntyre, manager of the Raeford Theatre, had offered to give the entire proceeds, after Federal taxes, from the seven and nine o’clock shows at the theatre tomorrow night. Gatlin urged all who are able to attend the movie and thus help the drive a little more. The movie to be shown is a Monogram picture, entitled “Jiggs and Maggie in Court.” and will feature George McManus, famous cartoonist and creator of the strip, “Bringing Up Father.” Cotton Change Is On The Way Through Congress The Cooley Admendment to re lax the stringent restrictions on cotton planting for 1950 has passed the House of Representatives and now has to get by the Senate and receive the President’s signature to be valid and effective. Under this amendment cotton acreage would be adjusted bn these prlhicpal formulas: 1. No farm cotton acreage alot-^ ment for 1950 shall be less than the larger of 70 per cent of the average acreage planted to cotton in the base years of 1946, 1947 and 1948. 2. Or 50 per cent of the highest acreage planted to cotton on the farm in any one of these three years. 3. The adjustments under 1 and 2 above shall not apply if it serves to increase the cotton acre age above 40 pe rcent of the total crop land. Congressmen are urging imme diate action on this amendment so that its benefits will apply to this year’s crop. UORE ABOUT Paving Of Road of Commissioners in Hoke coun^. “The Chief of Engineers has re quested Colonel B. L. Robinson, the Division Engineer, Corps of Engineers, Atlanta, Georgia, to contact Hoke county officials to the end that a solution to the problems be worked out. The basis for the solution, according to the Department of the Army, will be that the county will abandon its road easement through the area, or at least subordinate the use qf the road to military requirements, on-condition that the Fort Bragg authorities maintain the road in a reasonable condition and keep the road open for civilian use at the times it is not required for mili tary purposes.” ' 0- PERSONALS Mrs. Jennie Blue, who had gone to Concord with Mr. and Mrs. George Bethune the week before, spent the week in Concord and came back to Raeford Sun day, with Lacy Clark and Mrs. Kate Blue Covington, who went for her.
