MRS. HEYWARD HAS TEA FOR MISS ALICE WALKER Miss Alice Walker, popular" di rector of Music and Religious Education in the local Presbyter ian church, was honoree at a very lovely tea, last Thiursday after noon, given at the Manse by Mrs. W. B. Heyward. The hour during which i a hundred or more guests, repre sentatives of all the church grpups in town, called, was from five to six. Mrs. Heyward, Miss Walker and Miss Walker’s mother, Mrs. J. G. Walker of Forest City, greeted the callers. They were in vited into the dining room, where from a table, covered with a green lace cloth, centered with a bowl of vari-colored dwarf zinnias, Mrs. Herbert McKeithan poured punch. Mrs. J. W. McPhaul and Mrs. Hector McNeill, Jr. served. The Qolors of the flowers were carried out in the icing on the individual cakes, making a most inteestihg effect. This tea was a farewell court esy to Miss Walker as she left Friday :{or her hom^ in Forest City. JOYCE MANN HAS BIRTHDAY Joyce, Mann was host to about 25 friends when she. entertained on her 10th birthday last Friday afternoon at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. I. Mann. Girl Scouts of Joyce’s grbup and their leaders, Mrs. Virgil Dark and Mrs. Edith Lindsay, and a few closet friends were invited. Wein ers and raai^hmallows were roast ed in the Back yard, after which a beautiful birthday cake was cut and served by Mrs. Mann. Several games of bingo were play ed and prizes were awarded to Julia Morris, Harriet Smith, Kath erine Epstein and Kitsy Lou Nor ris. —^ 0-: Sgt. and Mrs. Bob Morris left Friday for Camp Campbell, Ken tucky, after spending the past three weeks here with Mrs. Mor ris’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. De- Witt Tapp. They spent Friday night in Charlotte in the home of Mrs. Morris’ sister, Mrs. J. D. McPhaul, and Saturday night in Black Mountain with Mrs. H. E. Stinchcomb. This pretty party was given at the Johnson^ home on Saturday afternoon at 4:30. Flowers in tasteful arrange ments, were used in living roojn and library. The dining room ar rangements were in all white and green. The table was covered with an embroidered linen cloth with lace inserts. A silver container on one end held white glads, snap dragons, roses and fern. On the opposite 6nd was the silver punch bowl, from which Miss Peggy Bethune served frozen punch. Placed on the table were dainty sandwiches in flower designs, other party dainties, nuts and mints, to which the guests served themselves. ' The hostesses gave their honor guest crystal goblets. , About twenty friends and rela tives of the bride-elect were pre sent. Mrs. William J. Rybka and i Mrs. Paul Alligood of Fayette ville were the only out-of-town guests. Miss Agnes Mae Johnson and Charles Hostetler were the only guests other than members and were remembered with a gift. Three tables were in play and at the conclusion of the game high score prize was awarded to Ray Muench and Charles Morrison was ^iven a consolation prize. Mrs. Huggins is the former Miss Deane Matheson of Raeford. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Keith, Jr. announce the birth of a son, born Monday, June 26, at St. Eugene hospital, Dillon, S. C. Mrs. Keith is the former Miss Creig Stanton of Dillon. Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Hines of Greensboro and Dr. and Mrs. Robert Cook and sons. Bill and Jack, of Sewanee, Tenn., were guests of Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Mur ray and Mrs. Murray’s mother, Mrs. Pritchett Sunday. They were en route to Crescent Beach where they have a cottage for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Upchurch left Tuesday for Philadelphia and Valley Forge, Pa. and other places of interest. Mary Sue and Lewis Jr. accompanied them. They went at this time especially to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Valley Forge. Mrs. Marion Gatlin, Lilmar Sue and Harold left Wednesday for Shallotte for a visit of several days in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Layton Bennett. They will re turn to Raeford Saturday. Mrs. Bill Maurer and children of Winston-Salem are visiting Mrs. Maurer’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John McKeithan. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gulledge and Sarah Ann spent the week end in Hertford with, Mr. and Mrs. George Wood. They were accom panied hom^ Sunday by Mr. and Mrs. Wood, who will be here un til around the middle of August when they will leave for Vance- boro, where Mr. Wood will be coach at the high school. Walter Barrington and Walter III left Monday night for their home in Ft. Pierce, Fla., 'after a two week’s visit here with Mrs. W. R. Barrington and family. Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Upchurch and daughters, Bettie and Eloise, left last Thursday for a trip through the mountains of West Virginia and to the Middle West. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Senter and children spent the week end in Kipling with Miss Doris Bradlev and Mr. Senter’s father,»W. L. Senter. who is quite ill. Mrs. B. B. Cole of High Point College spent the week end at home. Mrs. Mary Helton spent last week in Chapel Hill with Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Alexander, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Wood and son of Chapel Hill were here for the week end with Mrs. Wood’s mother, Mrs. Jewel Klouse. Tom McKeithan returned home from Highsmith hospital Monday. He had been a patient there for several days and was quite sick. Mr. and Mrs. Riley Willis and Jean spent Saturday in Wilming ton. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Purcell and daughter arrived Monday from Hagerstown, Maryland, for a visit with Mrs. Purcell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Stevens. After their visit here they will leave for Philadelphia to make their home.* Don Conoly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conoly, underwent a ton- silectomy at Dr. Hodgin’s in Red Springs last week. Mr. and Mrs. Neill A. McDonald and Neill were week end guests at White Lake of Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Godwin of Fayetteville. Mrs. Ashton Coughenour and children, Harold and Betty Lou McDiarmid, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, are visiting Mrs. Coug- henour’s mother, Mrs. Ina T. Lentz. Carolyn Dixon of Oxford is spending this week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Wade. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. She joined the Gatlins here Sunday and went with them to the beach. Major and Mrs. Fratjk Harper and two daughters of Mobile, Alabama, will arrive today to spend the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Niven. Major and Mrs. Harper had an apartment in the Niven home several years ago while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg.
