The tields -pl-anted for grazing
sliould be ir. .'.ized with 400 lbs
6-8-6 at sec.iing and to# di-essed
with 100 to 000 lbs. of Nitrate of
Soda or its cQuivalent in the fall
when growth starts and again
in February.
It is best to disc the land and
allow it to settle by rain before
seeding—otherwise a poo;- stand
may result. It is highly important
to seed when the soil is moist,
otherwise crimson clover is likely
to germinate without enough mois
ture for the seedlings to live. Seed
should be covered about % to 1
inch deep. Seeding may be done
with grain drill or hand seeder
and covered with weeder.
It is necessary to inoculate Crim_
son Clover an Vetch. This can
be done by placing seed in open
container, add water, sweetened
with sugar, syrp or molasses to
seed to moisten. Stir thoroughly.
Then add the inoculum and mix
thoroughly so that each seed
IS co.rted. If too much water is
-Tryt-egttort s^etl
. ill dry the seed sufficiently for
sowing.
Sunshine kills the inoculum, so
this work should be done in the
'i'-ade and the seed sowtl im-
tnediaiely. The sweetened water
holds the inoculum to the seed
and helps feed bacteria until the
seed germinate;
Corhmon vetch should 'be seed
ed for grazing since hairy vetch is
not palatable to caUIe. Vetch will
grow' staisfactorily on somewhat
.sandier soil than- will crimson
clover. Rye will provide more
grow’th on sandy soil than oats.
It is difficult to get proper in
oculation on land the first year,
while in following years it is
easier and growth will be corres
pondingly better. Sandy soil is
more difficult to get inoculated
than heavier soil.
