X COUPLES CLUB MEETS WITH THE LESTERS * The couples club met on Thurs day night of last week with Mr. . and Mrs. T. B. Lester. Two tables, % made up of club members, eh- ^ joyed bridge. After several , pro gressions the_ high score prize was awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Upchurch, Jr. After the game a delicious des sert course was served with cof- ■ fee. . Neil Senter came home from Fuguay yesterday to spend Thanksgiving with his family. He leaves today for Springfield, Ky., where he is with a tobacco market. Mrs. J. T. Ross of Washington, N. C. is visiting her iiughter, Mrs. Robert Ga'tlin. GARD^' CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. GATLIN The Garden Department of the Raeford Woman’s dub met Tues day afternoon at the home of Mrs. Robert Gatlin, with Mrs. Marion Gatlin and Mrs. W. T. Covington serving as' associate hostesses. There were fifteen members present and tli^ door prize, a beau tiful hanging basket'of ferns, was ^von by Mrs. Paul Dezeme. Plans are being made to organ ise a garden club among the color ed people, a junior garden club and a men’s garden club. The program for the afternoon was on indoor plants and jheir care and planting bulbs, present ed by Mrs. Clarence Lytch and Mrs. G. B. Rowland. An interest ing feature of the meeting was an exchange of perennial plants and shrubs. Phone 8748 The November meeting of the Raeford PTA was held Monday night in, the Graded School build ing. Mrs. Robert Gatlin, president, presided. After a short .business session Mrs. W. T. Gibson introduced Supt. A. B. Gibson of the Laurinburg City Schools, who is also Presi dent of the State Division of-the NCEA. Mr. Gibson spoke on the Progress of Education, compar ing the schools of 100 years ago, stressing the fact that the future of the world depends upon the school children of today. He said some things that parents can do to help the schools are: to visit the schools more often in order to know just Svhat is being done in the classrooms, Ho work for small er classes and to try to improve the teaching situation so that more young men and women will enter the profession, thus helping to relieve the acute shortage of teachers in the elementary schools. In observance of American Ed ucation week, parents and visitors were invited to the classrooms to talk with the teachers and enjoy a social hour. The attendance prize was won by Mrs. Roberts’ fourth grade. 0 Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stanfield of Roxboro are Thanksgiving guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Har ris and sons. Mr. Stanfield is a brother of Mrs. Harris. ■'According to a custom of several years, the Hoke County Library held its annual open house last Friday afternoon in observance of National - Book and Education Week. ■During the hours from 3:30 till 5:30, many friends of the library called and expressed their appre ciation and approval of the ex cellent condition of the library. Mrs. J. M. Andrews, chairman of Hoke County Library Board of Trustees, and Mrs. Luke Bie- thune. Librarian, greeted the call ers, who were invited into tlve children’s room where refresh ments were served. A large table, covered with a lace cloth, was attractively and,^ appropriately arranged for the oc casion. The punch bowl was ^- circled with greenery and brilli-' ant colored autumn leaves. Green candles in brass candelabra com pleted, the table decorations. Ar-r rangements of chrysanthemums were used in both rooms. Mrs. ?Aarion Gatlin .poured punch. Mrs. Tommie Upchurch, Mrs. Neill McFadyen and Mrs. K. A. Mac Donald assisted in serving punch with a variety of party cookies. ' Those calling registered with Mrs. A. K. Currie. That the library, with its ex cellent collection of books, fcr adults apd children, the nation’s best daily and weekly papers, and many magazines, is a cred'.t to this community, was heard on all sides. f 0 MISS LEWIS HONORED AT SALEM COLLEGE Miss Marian Lewis, daughter ^ Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Lewis, was recently initiated into the Order of the Scorpion, an honorary service organization, at Salem College. She was chosen for memr bership on basis of her service and extracurricular activities. Miss Lewis is a member of the Athletic Association, the Y, is president of the Junior Class, .sec retary of the Choral Ensemble, and .was treasurer of the Metho dist Organization. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burtis Sanders Bum- ham of Pucket and the groom is a native 'Raeford, boy. He is the son of Mrs. T. D. Hatcher of Fay etteville and the late Dr. McDiar mid of Raeford, and is a nephew of Mrs. Marcus Dew. Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher attended the wedding and then went to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Mr. Hatcher is taking treatment. 0 DAVIS - HOUSTON Miss Hannah Blake Pr; daughter of Mrs. Blake Pric^ of Charlotte and M. K Price \ of Salisbury, and John Allen Wir- ren of Red Springs, son of Mrs. E. C. Boone of Wilming^ and' the late J. A. Warren of F^ette- ville, were married Saturday night at 7 o’clock in Caldwell Memorial Presbyteyian church, Charlotte. Rev. C. Lee Williamson and !Dr. C. G. McClure Officiated, using the double ring ceremony. The altar, which was'banked with palms, cibotium, and aspar agus fern, was flanked with bas kets of white chrysanthemums. Seven-^brEuiched candelabra held lighted cathedral tapers. The fam ily pews were marked with white satin ribbon. The wedding music was pre sented by Mrs. Norwood Cheek of Leaksville and Miss Zelma Grant ham of Fairmoht. The bride was given in marriage by her father. N. A. Smith of Red Springs, uncle of the .bride' groom, was best man. Ushers were E. M. White of Hudson, brother' in-law of the bride, Max Mc Manus, Raymond Ammons and William McCoy of Red Springs. Mrs. E. M. White was her sis ter’s matron of honor. Brides maids were Miss Betty Smith of Red Springs, cousin of the bride groom, and Miss Jo Snell and Miss Enid Grady of Charlotte. Shelice Clontz, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. - The bride wore a gown of slip per satin and imported Chantilly lace fashioned with yoke of il lusion with shirred lace extending over the shoulders to form a deep sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice, long tapering sleeves, and full skirt, which extended into an ; aisle-wide train, featuring lace panels on either side. The finger tip veil of imported silk illusion was worn with a cap of shirred lace caught on either side with orange blossoms. Her only orna ment was a strand of pearls, gift of the bridegroom. She carried a prayerbook topped with a cascade bWquet of fleur d’amour, star light roses, lilies of the valley, and a white orchid. There was no reception. The couple received in the vestibule of the ct\urch after the ceremony. For a wedding trip to Wash ington, D. C., the bride wore an Oxford grey suit with grey and blue accessories and the orchid from her bouquet. Mrs. Warren was graduated with the 1951 class of Flora Mac donald college, where she was editor of the college yearbook, ^‘White Heather”, and was select ed to appear in “'Who’s Who in American Universities and Col leges”. She is a member of the Raeford school facqlty. Mr. Warren attended East Car olina college in Greensville, N. C.,. and served three years with the Marine corps in World War II, 18 months of which was spent in the Pacific theater. He is empliyed by Lumbee River Electric Member ship corporation of Red Springs. » Mrs. Warren is a mem'ber of the Graded School faculty of Rae ford, being fifth grade teacher. The couple will live in one of the Cameron duplex apartments. 0 Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hampton returned Friday from a week’s Mrs. flallie Mitchiner Broughton of Gamer and L. A. Lentz of Ra leigh were married in Raleigh, I Thursday, November 1, at the 'home of Mr. Lentz’s broth«-in- law, the Rev. J. W. Bradley, who officiated at the, wedding. Mr. Lentz is a former resident of Raeford and is a brother of Mrs. J. K. McNeill. The couple spent their honeymoon in New York. ■■ 0 , Miss Martha Davenport and The Rev. and IM, P. O. Miss Iris Thomas of St. Mary’s, Raleigh, is spending the Thanks giving holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Thomas. Mrs. Thomas’ mother, Mrs. Walter Pkeeman of Aberdeen, is also here today. John D. McPhaul of Charlotte joined Mrs. McPhaul and their son, Angus D. at the home of Mrs. MoPhaul’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. DeWitt Tapp, for Thanksgiving. Mrs. McPhaul and son. who have been here a- week, will accom pany Mr. McPhaul back to Char lotte today. Mr. and Mrs. Halford Stone of Washington, D. C. were guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Warren Fri day and Saturday of last week; They are the parents of Harold Stone, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Warren, and were en route to Washington after a two week’s vacation in Florida.
