QUESTION: I plan to feed my ewes on grain so they will be gaining at lambing time. When should I begin feeding grain? ANSWER; Li\*estock specialist A. V. Alien of State College says you should start feeding grain to ewes one month before you ex pect them to Iamb. Your ewes should gain 25 pounds between breeding and lamAng and one- half of that gain should be put on in the last month. Allen says you can expect sturdier lambs and a better sup ply of milk for them if you make sure lambing ewae show a. steady weight gain. He suggests that every flock owner aim for a 120 per cent lamb crop. Good man agement of ewes can help them reach that goal. QUESTION; Last winter my laying flock developed colds and I had. a pretty severe setback in egg production. What are your suggestions for winter care of laying flocks. ANSWER: Roy S. Dearstyne, hea^ of Poultry Science Depart ment here at the college says drafty houses . can cause trouble from respicatory diseases and re sult in a production drop. He ad- visas using ventilation facilities v' h the utmost care and making tko birds as comfortable as pos- si 'le under winter conditions. I! you want to make improve ments in your houses or build a ne'v one that provides the right ventilation, you can get building plans from your county agent or by writing to, the Extension Poul- tr' man, State College Station, Ra leigh. Dearstyne also warns that spec ial care be taken to keep litter dry. Proper ventilation, avoiding overcrowding and constant check ing will help you control moisture in litter. Don’t forget to protect ysur drinking fountains ''front! freezing, however. ^ -IP STATE COLLEGE HINTS TO FARM HOMEMAKERS All primary kaolin produced in the U. S. comes from North Car olina. And you simply can’t beat her as a good cook and housekeeper. Yes, honey, Grandmother does know. She knows about all these practical things—and much more. She knows the deeper lessons of life. She knows that right is right and wrong is wrong—and that right is always best. The girl who is blest with a good mother and a good grandmother, and is smart enough to learn from them, can practically chart her own happiness and build a life that is a blessing to mankind and the world. Grandmother knows that spiritual things are far more I important than material p.; things. She knows that God rules in the kingdom of men, that the Church is His mes senger, and that faith is man’s hope of salvation. RAEFORD PRESBYTERIAN W. B. Heyward, Pasto' 9:45 A. M.
