Gardeners are already becoming dahlia-conscious, probably be cause the roots are now being ex tensively advertised in the gard en magazines and newspapers and are also being sold by seed stores and chain stores. One of the most frequent ques tions being asked me is: When will you plant your dahlias? I usually plant more than 200 roots, but I never plant before May 1 here at Raleigh. My advice would be to plant during early May in the central and western portions of the State and about May 25 to June 1 in the extreme eastern portion of the Stat|. The dahlia is a fall flov/er and .will give you better blooms in the fall if it is not pl.vited too early. If you grew dahlias last year and left them in the ground over winter, they should be taken up now before they send up ^.etra above the ground and becumd divided. Even if you want only one plant, divide the clump, plant one division, and give the others away. Leaving the clump in tne ground will give you several main stems, a lot of early flow ers and usually poor flowers in the fall when they ought to be at their best. In digging the c'ump be c'^re- ful not to break the necks of the tuberous roots. Some varities have ”ery slender necks. In div'di ’; the clump you must, have at least orle bud or eye and one root w ith each division. You will find tl;t. buds on the main .=tem or ar tlio base of the stem—not on the roor itself. Usually you can vet frorr three to five divisions from each clump. These divisions can : e kept in a cool place, covered v. itli peat moss or dry sand until the proper planting time. Sometimes la April in this co*» umn I win diaeais varletka and give planting instructions. A laibor-saving mechanical thin- ner-weeder has been developed for use in sugar beet planting. It promises to eliminate one machine operation and reduce the amount of hand labor required ftr thin ning and weeding.
