time esqtressed ttieir appreciation
of the fact ttiat the Board of Ed
ucation was preparing to give
them much better educational ad
vantages.
The Rockfish school board had
a meeting Tuesday afternoon at
'fte home of the chairman and
elected Ralph Street of Buladean,
N, C. as principal, replacing T.
C. Jones who had announced his
resignation early in March.
Mr. Street conics hyhly recom
mended and made .1 excellent
impnjssion on all who. met him.
He is a brother of J.ir.ics W. Street,
prini i,'.!! of the Mil.iou ;on sch.vio’..
W. P. Phiilip.s, V.f-ad of the vo
cational agricuPure department at
Hofcc High, is attending the state j
conference of agricultural teach-1
ers being held at Carolina Beach
this week.
The Timberland school also
celebrated its last closing exercises
on Thursday. These began right
after noon with an exhibit of
school work, and an exercise put
on by the children of the lower
grades. In the late afternoon a
picnic supper was served and that
night the children of the grammar
grades gave an entertainment.
Tliis school will be consolidated
with. Upchurch next fall.
Last Wednesday evening the'
Rockfish School put on its Gram
mar Grade program. This con
sisted of a pljy “An Apple for the
Teacher"; music by Mrs. P. C.
English; tire salutatory by Eliza
beth Am: Overton; poem by Betty j
Lee; song by the grades; poe.Ti by
Howard Hobson and the valedic
tory by Betty Scarboro. The prin
cipal and superintendent then pre
sented the awards.
Just as the exercises w'ere end
ing Mrs. English asked for a word.
She then, on behalf of the pupils
and parents, expressed their
'dianks and appreciation for work
done at Rockfish to Principal
Jones and Mrs. B. B. Cole of the
faculty, who had handed in her
resignation. Mrs. English praised
the work of these two and voiced
tile regret of the parents at their
leaving. To emphasize all she had
been saying, before taking her
seat, Mrs. English presented, on
brfialf of those she spoke for,
substantial gifts to both of these
resigned teachers and wished them
Godspeed in their new fields of
labor!
Shrciy Grove had its closing ox-
oi ''i.sc.‘: Thursday night. The chil
dren put on exercises that were
most entertaining and instructive.
A crowded house responded heairt-
’’>■ to them. The pupils and teach
ers showed that they had worked
hard by the grade of the enter
tainment given. The superintend
ent made a short talk and inform
ed the audience that in all prob-
abilit3' this school would be con
tinued for several years. This
seemed to meet the approval of
the people.
Most of the teachers and princi
pals have gone for the summer.
However, J. W. Turlington, book-
room manager, is still here check
ing books and winding up his
work for the year. Both Princi
pals Gibson and Page are still on
tiie job and may be contacted at
the schools if necessary. Both
dementary supervisors are also
here and busj' vunding up , the
work of the 3’e?r and beginning to
get ready for next year.
