C. Department of Agriculture. Most average prices for tobacco strengthened this week on the Border North and South Carolina flue-cured markets when compar ' ed with the two-day sales of the previous week. Increases ranged from 1.00 to 7.00 per hundred but most gains were around 1.00 to 2.00. Very little change was no ticed in the quality of offerings. However, a larger percentage of cutters and leaf were offered with less lugs and nondescript. Vol ume of sales was light at all mar kets. Gross sales through Thurs day amounted to almost 28 mil Jion pounds for an average of 51.99 per hundred pounds. Continuing a downward trend which began about three weeks ago, hog prices this week reached their lowest level since mid-April when they started climbing to ward the season's high mark of 26.00. Eastern Carolina hog buy ers this week dropped their prices 1.75 below last week's close and reported top hogs on Friday at 21.75 to 22.00 per hundred. Com paratively spenkinu. however, this is steady to 25 cents lower than last year's prices of 22.00 to 22.25 on the same d.ite. Chicago's clos ing price on top hogs was 23.50, which is 50 cents above the week's low spot but 1.75 under last Fri day's close. Sales of cattle on the Rocky Mount Livestock Auction market this week were reported bringing fully steady prices. Fat butcher beef type cows sold from 10.00 to 13.00 and good fat heifers from 14.00 to 16.50. Good fat vealers Tanged from 22.00 to 23.50; good to choice butcher steers from 18.00 to 19.50; and good fat butcher bulls from 13.00 to 14.00. Most grades and classes of cat tle sold in Chicago this week brought steady to lower prices. Choice and prime fed steers and yearlings were reported at 24.50 to 27.50 while good low choice offerings ranged from 20.00 to 24.00. Good to low choice heifers ranged from 18.50 to 21.50 and utility and commercial cows from 10.00 to 13.50. Choice arid prime vealers topped at 24.00 but the bulk of commercial to choice grades brought 16.00 to 23.00. Fryers and broilers declined one cent per pound In the Cen tral North Carolina area this week and the market closed steady at 28 cents per pound f.o.b. the farm. Heavy hens remained stea dy throughout the week at 23 to 35 cents with most sales reported at 25. Fryers were irregular at other leading southern markets. North Georgia reported a slightly lower price at 27 to 27 Vi cents f.o.b. the farm while prices in the Del marva section were fully steady at 27i,i to 29 Vi. In the Shenan doah Valley, prices were general ly one cent higher at 27 to 29 cents per pound. Eggs remained steady in Ra leigh with local producers receiv ing 58 to 59 cents per dozen for A, large; 52 to 54 for A, medium, and 51 to 54 for B, large. Shelled corn prices were un changed at central and eastern North Carolina markets during the week. No. 2 yellow corn ran ged from 1.70 to 1.75 per bushel in the eastern part of the state and was reported at 1.85 in the; Piedmont area. Wheat and oat prices also were steady. No. 2 red 1 winter wheat was reported at 1.70 to 1.85 per bushel and No. 2 red ors at 70 to 5 cents per bushel. New Yoik reported a dull sweet pot ito murket at the close of the week with bushels of V. S. No. 1 Golden from North Carolina wholesaling at 4.00 to 4.50. Peaches, on the other hand, were stronger in New York. Bushels of two-inch and up Hales from this state brought 4.50 to 4.75 and Ponderosas 4.00 to 4.25. Cotton prices remained about steady on the Nation's ten lead ing markets this week. Middling 1516 inch averaged 33.08 cents per pound on Friday. This com pares with 33.19 last Friday and 40.49 on the corresponding date a year ago. S. egg production this fall is likely to be above that of last fall, but shell egg stocks are the lowest on record.
