Harvey (Ireland). 0 State College Answers Timely Farm Questions QUESTION": How many organic re tier is needed in the soil? ANiSV. ER: There is not a speci fic organic matter requirement for crop growth. Organic matter is not utilized as such by plants. We can say that a 100-bushel corn crops will require from 150 to 200 pounds of nitrogen, but we cannot say that the same crop of corn will need a given amount of organic matter. Many of the effects of organic matter on crop growth are indirect. Soils that contain higher amounts of or- nitrofcen which is released upon decomposition. Legumes such as clovers or alfalfa are righer in nitrogen than non-legumes. The residue from this decomposition results in organic matter which contains a lower percentage of nitrogen than the original mater ial. This nitrogen is released more slowly than from unde composed plant materials. Thus, organic ma ter reported by soil tests will generally release only a small amount of nitrogen annually. ANSWER: Nitrogen becomes a- vailable to plants through de composition or organic matter and applied fertilizers. The amount of I .lilililliiidMiiouiJi'oMiiiiiiliiHiii'i'iiT;1:!;!:!:! lillillllliiillll nitrification must take place to replace it. An analysis of the to tal nitrogen present in soil is not a good guide to the amount that will be available at any given time for plant growth. Since it is rather difficult to "build up" a hiph soil nitrogen level that will remain for several years, the ni trogen fertilization practices must be considered tor each crop. Whether to use nitrogen, and the amount to apply, would depend on the requirements of the speci fic crop. A knowledge of crop re sidue and manures recently add ed plus the organic matter con tent of the soil will give infor mation relative to what material can be decomposed to furnish a vailable nitrogen. Most soils In North Carolina are low in nitro gen FOR SALE AT AUCTION January 6, 1954 - 10:C0 O'clock HARDISON FARM Located on Fayetteville Highway, 8 miles north of Raeford.
