Activities Around Antioch Br MIm Fronde Kennedy One of the outstanding events . of the church year is Young Peo ple's Day, which was observed in the Antioch Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Sharing the pulpit with the pastor were four of the young people Bobby Clark and Misses Carole Ever leigh, Harriet Hodgin, and Fran ces McDonald. Bobby Clark read the scripture lesson and offered the first pray er. The girls told in turn of the activities and anticipated projects if their group. During the year just ended they have held Sun day evening meetings regularly and have assisted in various church enterprises. Last June, with the pastor as leader and chaperone, they went for a "re treat" to Montreat. They hope to repeat this experience this year. Mr. Crosswell participated in the pro gram by commending the young people, pointing out that the fu ture of the church is in their keeping, and admonishing the members of the congregation con cerning their duties, responsibil ities, and opportunities in con nection wth this phase of the church's work. v Bobby Clark Is president of the organization, Charles Conoly is Secretary-Treasurer, and Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hodgin are Adult Advisors. An important meeting of the local presidents of Women of the Church in District Five of Fay etteville Presbytery was -held in the home of Mrs. J. M. Andrews, chairman, last week. The purpose of the meeting was to plan the year's work, and an especially in teresting topic was the proposal to establish a scholarship at Flora Macdonald. The consensus of the group was favorable. Those present were: Mrs. La mon Bruner of the Antioch Church, Mrs. Guy Bulloch of Be thel, Mts. Fred Culbreth of Rae ford. Miss Elizabeth Blue of Parkton, Miss Alene Shaw of Rex, Mrs. Fred Russell of Lum ber Bridge, and Mrs. David Mc Innis of Galatia. The Executive Board of the Women of the Church of Antioch held their reffular monthly meet ing on Sunday afternoon. The January meeting of the Men of the Church was postponed to the evening of Friday, Febru ary 5, on account of the conflict with the March of Dimes supper, which was held in the Antioch church last Friday evening. The first meeting of the new church year will be an especially important one, since new officers will be installed. They are as fol lows: Henry Fowler, President; Herbert Gillis, Vice-President; Radford Collins, Secretary; W. J. McBryde, Treasurer. A. B. Hafer,' of Laurinburg, one of the outstanding laymen of the area, will make the inspira tional address. The supper to raise money for the polio fund was a great suc cess. It brought together a large number of local friends, provided them with a delicious fish or chicken salad supper as they pre ferred, and added a substantial sum in the neighborhood of $200 to the fund. Mrs. James Carpenter and Mrs. W. C. Hodgin were co-chairmen, and they had a large staff of as sistants. A special table of cakes and pies was presided over by Mrs. Sarah McDonald and Mrs. Ruria Shelton. Mr. Joseph Campbell, who has been in bad health for some time, suffered a severe paralytic stroke last Friday and has been in a serious condition since. Clyde Campbell obtained leave from Camp Butler, where he is stationed, to come to his father's bedside. McKenzie, Jr., Mrs. Roswell Tan ner, and Mrs. Gardner Bostic. Mrs. T. H. Ellerbe of Lumber ton, her sister, and two children were visitors in the Crosswell home on Sunday. Mrs. J. W. McPhaul returned Friday from Elkin where she had been at the bedside of her son, Graham. He is on the road to re covery. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood Baldwin and Walter McPhaul of Lumberton drove to Elkin to visit their brother and his family. Consumption of cotton by Unit ed States mills has been running below last year. Exports for the first four months of this season totaled 853,000 bales, some 138, 000 less than a year earlier. In 1950, some 91.1 per cent of North Carolina farms were with out the services, of a telephone.
