The district consis's ot Anson, IToke, Richmond and Scotland Counties. Reports of the year's work will be heard in the morning. Lunch will be served by the club women of the com munity. This gives them the right to enter the district con test in the beef cattle contest with 295 points out of a possible 300. We are proud of them. The general livestock team was com posed of James Potter, Sidney Turner and Chailes Lee. Those making up the Diary team were Grady Hardin, Robert Gordon and Charlie Martin. We hope that they will win ou' in the district contest. There will be a white principals meeting held in the county office Monday afternoon, April 12, at 4:15. We are glad to report that T. C. Jones, principal of the Mildou son School, Is recuperating nicely at home after having been operat ed upon at Moore County Hospi tal. Last week, Representative Har ry Greene talked to Mr. Turling ton's seventh grade and explain ed to them how a bill goes through the legislature f.um in ception to ratification. He also explained how congressional dis tricts are set up and why. All this was in conjunction with the class' study of American History. Principal Turlirgton of the J. W. McLauchlin School wishes to thank the firm of McNeill and Willis for their help in erecting the new flagpole. He also wishes to call attention :o the fact that the flag is not flying this week because of the fae that someone tampered with the chain over the week end, and brone it. The same firm has offered to help fix it. We hope that only those author ized to do so will touch the pole and chain. The pole will have to be taken clown to fix the chain. We are sorry to report that Grover Bullard, another student, broke his collar bone last week. We are sorry he did not have the school insurance. Quite a number of the county teachers attended a meeting, held in the West Southern Pines High School last week, by Charles E. Spencer, Health Co-ordinator for the State Department of Public Instruction and the State Board of Health. This meeting was held to introduce the new course of s'udv in Health. The finals in the county-wide speaking and spcl'ing contest were held at Burlington School Wednesday afternoon. The chil dren and the schools they repre sented are as follows: Speakers: Lillie Rec Fairley, Shady Grove: Ethel Lee Campbell, Buffalo; Sal tie Lou Black, Freedom; Theou McNair, Friendship; Willie C. Stanley, Burlington. Spellers: Mo zella MeCloud, Fryc's Mission; Worth McLaughlin, Bowmore; Dock McKoy, White Oak; Lois McAllister, Shady Grove; Nanny C. Monroe, Burlington. All of the above named pupils were winners in the elimination ' contests held last week. We are sorry we do not have the winners of the county contest at this writing. We hope to be able to give them next week. Delegates to the State Teach ers Association Delegate Assem bly are leaving Thursday for Ra leigh to attend the yearly meeting. o IPCHIRCH SCHOOL NEWS The winner of the local World Peace Speaking Program, Mozelle Flowers and the teacher-coach will go to Shaw University, Ra leigh, on April 8 o participate in the District Fina's. The district winner and teacher-coach will re ceive the free expense-paid trip to the United Nations, New York and to Washington, D. C. Upchurch is happy to have as 'practice teachers from A & T College, Greensboro, Rufus G. Kelly. Chemistry and Math, Henry L. Gilchrist, Social Science, and W. G. Matthews, Brick Mason ry. These practice teachers will be here until thirty hours of ob servation and nxty hours of teaching have been completed. The Choral Club of Upchurch Higii tiiiool will be presented in concert on Sunday, April 11, at the Wall's Chapel Methodist Church, Raeford at 11:00 a. m. and at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Maxton. Sunday evening at 7:00. The last scheduled game of the Upchurch baseball team was can celled due to bad weather.
