Visitor Sr Ledora Tbompion An outstanding Homo Demon stntion Club member of Que- wbiHlo township, will bo among the many North Carolina Farm Women delegates, who were elec ted from each county throughout the state, to attend the United Nations on October 17-22. Hrs. Roy S. Goodwin of Me- Cain vill meet with the Home makers at Sir Walter Hotel, Ral eigh, early Monday morning whero they will board a char tered bus for the week-long trip. Every yoar or mere outstand ing bomemaken from each coun ty is elected by former delegates to make a tour of the United Nations which is sponsored by the Home Demonstration Clubs. These tours are .designed to broaden the Farm Women’s views in world affairs and to enlighten them-of what is going on in the U. N. This year they are also sched uled to visit the .home of our late president, Franklin D. Roose velt, the Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park and the Art Gallery in Washington, D. C. Elected to make the tour with Mrs. Goodwin from this county is, Mrs. R. E. Neeley of Route 2, Raeford. Mrs. Goodwin, a community builder and member of Ashemont Home Demonstration Club, has been quite active in club work for the past five years. She is greatly rcspoiuible for the suc cess and growth of the Quewhif- fle Community Fair which started four years ago and is now one of Hoke County's most outstand ing annual community projects. Each year the day-long event attracts many people from out side the county and this year was no exception as hundreds flocked in to see the magnificent displays the rural folk had gather ed. Mrs. Goodwin has been the Librarian at the North Carolina Sanatorium for the past fifteen years. She is a member of the Sanatorium Sunshine Club and has been a teacher of the Young Ladies Sunday-School Class of Ashley Heights Baptist Church for many years. In her spare time she likes to work in her flower garden or help her husband with 'handi crafts. She is also a good seam stress and a deft hand at cro cheting and needlework. Shortly after graduating from high school in 1927, she, the for mer Bessie Lawrence of Stokes County, contacted tuberclosis and was shut-in for eight years-a great portion of which time was spent in the hospital here. At first she felt as though her world had end ed but learned later that her life had only begun. Her bedroom became her liv ing quarters as well as her din- ing area and it was during these confining years, she relates, that she did some serious thinking which led to prayer, friends and family, that made life worth liv ing both at home and in the San atorium. She learned to appreciate things which she had always takened for granted or never felt the need or never had tihK for-never realizing before that the little insignificant things meant so much to a shut-in. Paliests At MeOain Ask For “Scrappiag” (Contributed) The patients at the North Caro lina Sanatorium are often hard pressed to sheure materials for their Occupational Therapy work since such materials are not pro vided by the State as a part of their treatment. Yet this therapy is very important to the patients and their needs in many cases are simple. Discarded Scraps or remnants of cloth and nylon stockings are made into useful articles such as quilts, stuffed animals, pillows, hats, bags, aprons, scuffs and other items. Many of these ar ticles in turn are sold to the patient’s friends and more mater ial purchased to make other items thusl’ perpetuating a con tinuing therapy for the total stay of the patient. Thus, a few scrape of cloth fill many otherwise long lonely hours with pleasant and some times profitable bedside occupa tion for those less fortunate than most.
