me mt-jcamjiL, OCTOBER IS. ifa NdiH GROWTH IN CHRISTIAN ^ REUTHMSHIPS By Clint H. Denman International Uniform Lesson SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR OCTOBER 22. 1961 • Scripture: Philippians 2:1- 18; Colossians 3: 1-4:1. Memory Selection: ‘‘Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interest of others." Phil 2:4. The memory verse for our lesson today warrants con sideration by all of us who would study with earnestness the ideas both condemed and approved by Paul in his mes sage to die church at Co- lassia. Paul says in Philippians that ‘‘each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interest of others.” This is an ideal note to com- ^ mence with after our conclu ding thoughts oflast week when it was said that we ‘‘should discover the love, patience, kindness and graciousness of God.” * Having developed a desire to learn about God. we im mediately find that knowledge of His power in our life makes new plateaus for us to face. We set our padi on future goals and future habits and relaflonshlps mat come trom those goals and habits. Daily the world becomes smaller in regards to time elements between two distinct locations. The distance is no less, but the knowledge of sci ence and of means of tra vel has made the distance turn into simple adding of min utes not the spanning of mile. In Colossians, Paul speaks about 15, characteristics of Christian relationships. Ten of these characteristics he strongly urges those who pos sess them to fid their minds, body and soul of their sin ful nature. These are immorality, im purity, passion, evil desire and covetousness as one par ticular group. Following these are anger, wrath, malice , slander, and foul talk. Each of these are worthy of les sons within themselves, yet as we Christians attempt to understand them we need like wise to search hearts for tra ces of their effect. The five virtues Paul calls to the attention of the Colo ssians should be allowed to replace the ten sins. They are compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness and pa tience. We speak of these of ten. Seldom are they prac ticed as they are preached! Kindness is a sense of sim ple goodness thatevenout pie goodndss that even out does that trait. Kindness is when we are willing to do by auto matic action, a deed that be comes grateful without praise to another living soul. When a child has been trained to be kind to its elders then an ultimate type of kindness has been developed thet makes for Christian Relationships be tween young and the old. Loveliness is a sense of sim ple humility. When one is low ly he is unassuming, but sin cere; unwanting in glory, out gracious in service. To be lowly in Christian relation ships is to express with your actions, ways that point up an attempt to express the spi- INSURANCE OF ALL KINDS riBE — UVE YOURfmKJtftadnt AUTOMOBILE LIABILITY nOMEOWNElS J. Meekness U a belqg Christ- ianly sky. but a^ritusUy alive with the workings of Christ- Patience is the streogdi that comes when you are spiritual ly rich enoi^ to overlook the faults of oUwrs -friends or foe - and instead of becom ing irritable, help diem to lose vehat irritable feelii^ toward life they possess. As great as these deeds, are, when we have possessed them, they are dangerously ebbing toward turning an about face within our ovm life. People have become so kind and so meek that they have lost their sense of lowliness. People at times have become so Christian in action that they spiritually lose these five traits because they begin to condemn and judge another child of God. Instead of this they should both be attempting to reason feelings, expressed sincerely, to determine God‘s way and God's will, — We allow ‘‘the peace ot Christ to rule within our hearts,” When this happens then we safely do ‘‘everydiing in the name of Jesus Christ.” These are easy words to pen or to say, but they are not easy deeds and tasks to do. It may mean that we become set aside from our particular habits that have marked us a life time if we allow ” the peace of Christ to rule In our hearts.” The reward for such action and witness is greater than the price. Secondly, “if we do every thing in the name of Christ Jesus, we automatically block many of the " righteous " things that were apart of our life. Again the reward is far greater than the price because we discover the rich blessings of Christ's way. Relationships come within the home, the school, the factory, the office, play and the creeds and races of peo ples. In all things we must seek God and His Guidance. Our decisions alone are no stronger than no decision at aU. Our decisions in the light of Christ’s knowledge are de- cisions worthy of God! So many have to lean on alcohol just to take the edge off. This is like put ting out a fire with oil. In practical ly all cases the hidden cause is one s p e c i f 1 c pressure po int at the base of the skull, In the neck. And when specifically corrected, these | patients regain a new life. Just a word of encouragement I to those of you whose sleep | Is not normal, who are tense, or irritable, who are envious of the relaxed or easy going individual.
