TTfC NCWS-jCUItNAL. OCTceSR 19. IMl IIA*70iS>. ttcnop Ui FACC > Farm Items Hoke County has never had an entry in the Soybean Club. You do not have to have a certified yield of fifty bushels e per acre to be eligible as a member. The state is divided into three areas. The Central Area, of which Hoke is a part, did not participate last * year. A very nice Free tour Is in store for the farmer from' this area that gets the highest yield even though it might not reach fifty bushels per acrs. If you have a good bean yield on a two-acre or bigger plot, please let the County Agent know about it so we can get you entered into the contest Don’t wait until your beans are harvested and tell us how good they were. Tell us before harvest so we can make the yield official. Livestock sales are plenti ful at this time of year. We try to keep a list of these sales in the office for your convenience. Come by to see * us if you are interested in the sales. » « « * * « • ■ Farmers in the U. S. seem to always be good for any kind of political maneuvers when someone needs a scape goat The fact is that U. S. farpiers are feeding this coun try cheaper than Ae farmers of any country in die world The people of the U. S. spend 20*70 of their disposable income for food. The Japanese spend about 42*70 of their disposable income for food. The West Germans spend 45*7o for food and the Russians 56*7o. Add these facts to the fact that processors handlers, brokers, retailers, etc also get a share of the consumers’ food dollar, the farmer ac tually gets a very small per cent of the consumers’ dollar. ***** We have had a great many calls about worms eating up azaleas. These bright colored worms are azalea cater pillars. They can be control led by dusting and spraying with DDT or Toxaphene. They probably won’t do much more ^ damage as long as the nights stay cold but you will want to watch your prize plants closely in the event of a warm spell. The farm forecasting ser vice and the USDA advise farmers who have storage facilities to store corn this year. Prices at harvest will be determined by the amount of corn surplus that the Govern ment turns loose at that jime. Indications are that farmers who are not protected by sup port price will be selling corn under the loan. ***** Soybean exports look bright for 1962. Over the past five years soybean exports have Increased at the rate of 18 million bushels per year. At the end of 1962 they promise to be 150 million bushels per year level. This adds tip to a total usage of about 640 million bushels per year. Home beautification is a never ending job. Some things that may be done to keep the home beautiful are as fRlows;: (1) Many yards have gotten extremely dry during the last few weeks. Azaleas and some odier shrubs are, in some cases, suffering badly. When watering your yard, give it a good soaking. Giving the yard a little sprinkle every day or so is not much help and in most cases harmful. (2) There is still time to root cuttings from most shrubs before cold weather. Remember to use only this year’s growth and put in a protected place. Direct sun light vrtll dry your cuttings out. (3) Are you bofiiered wltfi grubs in your lawn ?Chlordane should control both the white and Japanese beetle grubs. Be sure to follow die directions on the label and water in well. (4) Many new home owners In heavily wood ed areas are running into dif ficulty. Disease and insects are attacking their shade trees which were left standing when the home was built. There are a couple of causes for this situatioa First; most home owners have their.yard cultivated around all, these trees in preparing their lawn. This kind of cultivation is harmful to the roots of trees, it weakens them leaving them prey to disease and insects. Mechanical filling or exca vating can be very harmful to trees. When the soil Ls removed from around trees, many vital roots are lost. When filling is around trees adequate drainage and aera tion must be provided. To help prevent some of these losses the following pra ctices may be used. (1) Keep the soil moist at least a foot deep throughout the growing season. (2) Fertilize with two to four lbs. 8-8-8 or 6-8-8 or similar formulation per 100 sq. ft. of soil surface under the tree crowns, (3) Do not keep freshly cut pine wood piled near the home. Such wood attracts bark bee tles. Another way to con trol the bark beetle is to spray with Benezene Hexa- chloride emulsion. This should be applied every six weeks during the summer and early fall. ***** An all-out effort is being made to wipe out hog cholera. A new law authorizing theU.S. Department of Agriculture to undertake a broad Federal- State effort to eradicate hog cholera from the U. S. has bAen passed by Congress and signed by President Kennedy. Last year N. C. swine pro ducers lost $750,000 from this disease. National losses are estimated to be about $50 million doUars'aiuiually. L. S. D. A. estimates another $15 million dollars lost because eleven countries now restrict pork imports from the U. S. At present only 35 *70 of the hogs in the State are vaccinated for cholera. Some cases of choler abate been re ported in Heke County this summer Most Hoke County swinegrowers can help wipe out hog cholera by using good sanitation, vaccination, cooking garbage before feed ing, and isolating new animals for two weeks before being put in the herd. Whar are you, as a swine grower, doing to keep this disease out of your herd, county, and State?
