Mrs. Omer Register and child ren who spent the past year with her Imband at Colorado Springs came home some time ago as her husband was being Wet County Tomorrow? I like our town, and many other people tell me they like our town also. Hardly a week passes that some shopper outside our county tells me, “1 just love to come and sh(^ In Raeford." WhenI askthem why. many tell me that they find the people friendly, the clerks courteous, and the stores well stocked with the items for which they are shopping. I am sure much business comes to Raeford because of these facts. Another reason that respectable shoppers come to our tovm is that we rarely have drunks on our streets or in our stores, ft would be very hard to be helpful and courteous to a cus tomer while at the same time an intoxicated loafer is talking loudly and giving his credit references. 1 came to Raeford in 1939 while legal beer was being sold, and I am sure most of the merchants here at that time will tell you that they spent much more time getting drunks out of their places of business than they have since beer has been voted illegaL Our town has some alcoholics today that began drinking during the wet years when alcohol was so accessible. Statistics pro^ that alcohol is a killer of both life and productivity. The mature person must put the k^er label on alcohol; the liquor Industry will not do it. Let us look at one fact: Since aloOTol was voted Illegal years ago, the jail that served the town of Raeford was used so littl^that it was closed down completely. Do we want to See that jail being filled again ? The Town Fathers, by putting their approval on the selling of alcoholic beverages and making this killer legal, surely do not give a very strong warning to our young, future citi zens. I believe this warning should be as strong and as clear as we know how to make It. It is my conviction that the best way we can keep our youth from falling prey to alcohol is to voice our grave concern by means of our vote, and vote to make the killer, alcohol, an outlaw in Hqte County. The ice cream freezers are really getting a work out these hot days.
