r- D Raeford Teams Raeford Turkey Farms bas ketball team won the double elimination Fayettevllle Indust rial League tournament, but had to beat another Hoke team, Rae ford Gunners, to take the trophy. Paced by Dewey Andrew, former professional ca6e star, Raeford Turkey Farms gained an early advantage over the Gunners, but the gap was being closed fast at game's end. The final score was 65-58. Raeford Turkey Farms held 36-27 halftime lead, largely on the strength of t rally during the final two minutes of the first half. At the two-minute mark, the score was tied27-27. Raeford Turkey Farms stretched the lead to 17 points at one stage of the final quarter, but the Gunners gained ground in the closing moments. The winners went through the double-elimination affair with out defeat. They had finished the regular season In a tie for first place In the nine-team league. Raeford Gunners won the reg ular season trophy with a record of 10 wins and 2 losses, despite the fact that the team had nowhere to practice. Beginning the season with only a smat tering of outdoor practice, the Raeford Lions Plan Tourney Raeford Lions Club will stage a 36-hole open golf tournament May 4 and 5 at Arabia Golf Course six miles southeast of Raeford in the Arabia commun iry. Scoring in both the men's and women's division will be by flights. A trophy will be given to winners in each flight and additional prizes will be awarded in merchandise. A $50 merchandise prize is offered for a hole-in-one on the 163-yard 18th hole. Prizes will be given for the closest tee shot to the hole on 18. MAIN d76 fni.imnnmi i j Gunners relied on pre-game warmups to sharpen their game, and after losing two of their first five starts, they won the last seven games of the regular season without defeat. During the tournament, the Gunners were beaten by Coca Cola of Fayettevllle, 58-51, and dropped Into the lower bracket after gaining a bye In the open ing round. In addition to Andrew, the Raeford Turkey Farms team consists of Larry Phillips, Jim my Byrd, 3111 McPhaul, Larry Unchurch, W. K. Morgan, Ron Shy, Chan Roberts, Sonny Smith, Dave Russell, and Jimmy Mc Phaul. Raeford Gunners were Tim McKoy, James Roper, Lenzle Morrison, Everett Holllngs worth, James Pierce, Joe Mc Klnnon, Johnny Long and Henry Blue. Trophies were presented to the tournament winner and the runnerup team at the close of play. Andrew was voted the most valuable player of the tourna ment. He had a 15-polnt av erage for the regular season. Phillips had an 18.2 average. Tops In the league was more than 20. ceding the tournament. Satur day starting time will be as signed on a first-come, first served basis, with considera tion given to the contestant's preference, where passible. Sunday starting times will be assigned after Saturday play has been completed. Net proceeds from the tournament will be used for Lions aid to visually handi capped in this area. Entries should be mailed to Raeford Lions Club, Box 366, Raeford. Tickets and starting times will be sent the entrant by return mail. Finish 1-2 New Director Named For Poverty Program The board of directors of Sandhills Community Action Program has announced the ap pointment of William T. Altman of Raeford as the new program director for Hoke County. Altman is a retired army of ficer, having joined the retired ranks in August, 1966, after 26 years of service that spanned World War II. the Korean and Vietnam Involvement. He succeeds Maj. The golf, base, ball and track team all have suffered bitter defeat. The golf team suffered defeat in one sense of the word Monday, but third place lsnt really so had when playing aealnst five other teams on the difficult Hamlet course. Friday, the baseball team was "outsiucged," 13-12, by Scotland. The track men have taken a double dtp. Last Thursday our boys in white tasted defeat at the hands of the Lumherton Pirates, 64 -52.
