examination for the Doctor of
Education degree from the
Universitv of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill last week. Dr.
Brooks worked here in
1962-63. As Lee County
superintendent, he is one of
only seven superintendents in
North Carolina to hold a
doctorate degree.

Fine Arts Festival Sunday at

Worthless Checks, Traffic Violations
Fill Magistrate And District Court
Probable cause was found by
Judge Joe Dupree in district
court last week and L.Z.
Ellerby of Raeford, was bound
over to Superior Court on
charges of larceny of an
automobile from the lot of
Raeford Auto Co.
The accused is being held in
jail in default of $2,000 bond.
He is charged with taking l
1964 model Pontiac Tempest
C.T.O. valued at J 1,200 and
driving it to South Carolina
where he was picked up in
Marlboro County by a highway
patrolman.
Appeals to higher court were
filed by two other defendants.
Marcellus Boahn Fayetteville
Rt. 3, charged with driving
under the influence, was dealt
a sentence of six months which
was suspended for one year.
His driver's license was taken
for one year and he was fined
$100 and costs. He filed appeal
and posted bond of SI SO cash.
Sgt. Walter Vernon Rowe,
Fort Bragg, also charged with
driving under the influence, gut

Wreck Fatal
For .B. Pearce
Rufus Burnett Pearce, 37,
was killed in a one-car highway
accident in Scotland County,
Friday afternoon.
According to unofficial
report, the driver lost control
of the car on Turnpike Rd. and
crashed on the roadside near
the Hoke County line. He was
brought to a Raeford Funeral
Home by the Raeford Rescue
Squad.
He had been a resident of
Raeford for several years.
Funeral services were held
Sunday at II a. m. at the
Crumpler Funeral Home
Chapel by the Rev. E. C.
Hester. Burial was in the Perry
family cemetery in Zebulon.

Announcement was made this
week by CD. Bounds, Jr., Vice
President of Southern National
Bank, Raeford Branch, that
Robert L. Carter, Jr. was
elected to serve as chairman of
the Raeford Board of Managers
of Southern National Bank.
Carter will serve for one year
1969 and will be assisted by
John G. Balfour who was
elected Vice Chairman. Carter
is owner of the Carter Tire and
Recapping Center in Raeford.
He and his wife, Nell reside on
North Main Street, and they
have one son, Johnny, who is a
ninth grade student at Hoke
High School.
Balfour Is a prominent
farmer in the Stonewall
Community. He and his wife,
Joan have one son, John, Jr.
Rogers Frierson
On Work
Study Program
Rogers B. Frierson is one of
fifty-two young men and
women this year earning their
own way at Sandhills College
under the work-study program.
The program with student
loans, grants and scholarships,
is one of the financial aid
programs available to Sandhills
students.
Frierson, a sophomore from
Raeford, is an art major and is
working the allowed 1 5 hours a
week in the pottery and
sculpture department. He
mixes and processes clay
formulas for classes.
The art student last year
won $100 from the Smithson
fabric firm for a textile design.
The Higher Education Act
of the Federal Government,
first passed in 1958 and
amended in 1965 and 1968,
provides 80 per cent of the
funds used to finance the
work-study program. Twenty
per cent of the wages earned
by the students comes from
gifts of individuals and
organizations interested in
helping students prepare for
worthwhile careers in the
occupations interested in
helping students prepare for
worthwhile careers in the
occupational education
programs at Sandhills, or
helping them through their
freshman and sophomore years
so they can continue in senior
universities.
There are such other
work-study categories as
laboratory assistants, teacher's
aides, library aides and
maintenance aids. The latter is
for man students who help
maintain the buildings and
grounds.
