COMMENDATION Mrs. Joe Parker
who lives near the icene of the wreck that
occurred on US 401 South Saturday
called the office Monday with high praise
for Trooper Joe Stanley of the State
Highway Patrol. She staled that Stanley
worked without rest in removing the
bodies from the wrecked autos. Mrs.
Parker said that as far as she knew that
this was beyond the call of duty for a
patrolman. So we commend, Joe Stanley,
for job well done.
Another group that was on the scene
that we think should be praised are the
members of the Hoke Rescue Squad.
They give freely of their time and energy
it all accidents, whether traffic or
otherwise. The know-how of this group
makes the work of everyone seem easier
it ill times.
The Back-to-School Promotion in
Raeford is still in progress and local
merchants ire stocked up with any item
needed for your school needs. So if you
haven't looked over the bargains be sure
to do so this weekend. School begins next
week.
The Booster Club feed and the
Firemen's dinner being back to back
could have hurt the attendance at both
affairs. The city still isn't large enough for
too many feeds in the same week.
When you think of the Booster Club
you always think of Neill James Blue a
member ind strong supporter of the
Bucks. His lunt, Mrs. Kate Blue
Covington, was in the office this week
and stated that he was operated on in
Winston Salem for a slipped disc in his
back. We hope that this puts "the old
kid", as some of u know '.;? '""K'n
A-l shape for the upcoming football
season. So let's all hope for a speedy
recovery for NJ. Blue.
Robert Catlin, former fire chief of the
local fire department, was present ng
awards or making a speech at the
fiiemer's luncheon last Friday night and
had the 'ollowing comment to make as he
give an sward to Wayside lire
Department. The award was for the fast
action taken by that fire department
when the squire of Puppy Creek, Dick
Neeley's bathroom caught on fire and
they kept the flames from spreading to
the house.
The directors of the Chamber of
Commerce met Tuesday at seven a.m. for
the monthly meeting and had the new
highway commissioner as a guest.
During the course of the discussion one
person from Hoke asked the
commissioners if we could get just
one-half the roads Scotland County got
during the past four years. He replied that
Cumberland County would like to have
just one-half the roads that Columbus got
during the past four years. He said the
former commissioner for Cumberland was
in the county only twice to his
knowledge.
After the meeting everyone felt that
Hoke County was very fortunate to have
Charlie Dawkins and be with Cumberland
and Bladen Counties to form our district.
A letter signed L. Satterwhite states
that Cy Israel's letters are enjoyed by
many people in the Quewhiffle
Community and hopes we will continue
to print them.
N Of course, the letters will be printed as
long as Cy keeps sending them and his
weekly work gives him the time to write.
I was on vacation last week and found
a note in my basket from Mrs. Harry
McLean concerning "Menial
Retardation". Since two others are out
this week I haven't had time to contact
Mrs. McUan but will do so, just as soon
as the weekly rush is over. If anyone else
is interned in this subject you could call
her it 875-4144 ind let her know you
will help ilso.
The budgets and idmissioii committee
of the Hoke County United Fund
organization will meet Thursday night,
August 28 at K o'clock in the I ducal am
Building on t. Edinborough Avenue. If
you ha anything to come before them
be present with your reports, to states
Donald Abcniethy, chairman.

Project Up For Reletting
Special guest speaker at the monthly
Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors meeting was Charles Dawkins,
the appointed elected Highway
Commissioner for Cumberland, Hoke and
Bladen Counties.
Dawkins explained his intentions on
curving out the state highway program
and stated that he "would treat everyone
equal." During the speech Dawkins
announced that he would be re-letting
bids immediately for the Prospect Street
extension improvement. He estimated the
cost would run around $130,000. Only
SI 13,000 had been made available for
this improvement; the rest of the money
will come from the Commissioners fund,
according to Dawkins.
Another announcement Dawkins made
was to stress the fact that he will make
the widening of U.S. 401 one of his top
priorities. He stated that he would push
to get the 401 stretch between Raeford
and Fayetteville widened to four lanes.
Dawkins also re-affirmed the Highway
Commissions policy on the paving of
secondary roads and said that he would
follow the conditions of this policy and
play no favorites.
After his speech Dawkins introduced
his staff to the Board. Special guests at
the meeting were John K. McNeill,
mayor, T.B. Lester, County manager, and
Doran Berry, District Solicitor for

Hoke County's 1969 traffic death toll,
swelled by three weekend fatalities,
climbed to nine, one above the August,
1968 total.
The three deaths occurred when a
1967 Buick convertible collided, head-on,
with i I960 Chevrolet pick-up truck four
miles south of Raeford on US. 401
Saturday about 10 a.m.
The fatally injured were identified by
Highway Patrolman J.E. Stanley as Fred
Pcterkin Jr., 26, and his two sisters, Lois
Peterkin, 30, and Mary Helen Pcterkin,
28, all of Brookly n, N.Y.
The Pcterkins and five other persons
were en route to the funeral uf their
uncle, Ernest Whitman, in McColl, S.C.
Whitman had been fatally shot earlier this
week.
Listed in serious condition at Scotland
Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg were
Freddie Walker, 3, Aretha Walker. 8
months, Billy Graham, Doris Walker, 24
and Annie McLeod, 20. All were related
except Graham, apparently a friend of
the family from Brooklyn.
The group had moved to New York
several weeks ago from McColl, Stanley
said.
Also injured was Irving Starnes, 43, of
Wagram, who was hospitalised with
severe lacerations and broken legs.
Starnes was pinned in the pick-up truck
he was driving for two hours before he
was freed by Hoke County Rescue Squad
members.
Stanley said Pcterkin was driving a
convertible owned by Graham about four
miles south of Raeford on UJ5. 401 .
He apparently tried to pass a vehicle
which was turning to the right and
collided head-on with Starnes' pick-up.
Tlic two children were thrown through
the top of the convertible.
Pcterkin was killed instantly, and his
two sisters were dead on arnval at the
hospital, Stanley said.
Peterkin's drivers license had recently
been revoked in New York, Stanley said.
