en 7 The Hoke County Newt- Established 1928 The Hoke County Journal - Established 1905" VOLUME LXV NUMBER 26 RAEFORD, HOKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA 14 PER YEAR 10 PER COPY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1969 Hoke County Rejects Optional 10 Sales Tax jl mf Mm Vm WM "" Around Town BY SAM MORRIS Chirlei R. Dswkins, highway commissioner Tor the district, called lut week end tuted that he was still I district commissioner instead of a commissioner for Cumberland County. He related to me the same facts that were in the article in last week's paper. The funds in the projects for Cumberland were for urban and access roads and except for the short distance on US 401 North of Fayetteville no primary or secondary roads were In the projects. Dawkini said he was for the four Uning of US 401 to Raeford and would continue to work for the project. I guess that all the people of Hoke County can do is "Wait and See." It seems from reading the daily papers that the entire highway business of the state is in a jumble. The Governor wanting one thing and the chairman of the commission wanting something else. Of course in the long run .the governor should win out. he storm Saturday night brought bi k memories of Hszel that hit in 1954. T i wind sounded just like it did that y sr. We didn't realize how severe it was i itil Sunday morning. The trees that ere blown over and the limbs torn from trees caused the highway crews to start to work about 2 a.m. to make soma roads passable. The pecan crop in the county was hard hit and most people who have trees in their yards were out Sunday morning picking up the nuts. Of course some did the talk before Sunday School and oilers did the job during the Sunday School time. We won't mention any names at this time. Mrs. Graham Monroe was by Monday and asked that we remind all members of the graduating class of 1939 that haven't made reservations for the reunion Sunday, November 9 to do so by calling her. Tite Class Reunion will get underway at 4:00 p.m. and will meet at the Family Restaurant. I didn't ask Helen how many were in the class but it should have been around fifty. I was in the Class of 1933 and 48 graduated (hat year. The Class of 1935 was the last class to graduate bi the old building that was destroyed by fire I few years ago. At that time all eleven grades were in the building. I don't believe any teachers that were teaching at that time are still active today. The Hoke High Bucks will end the season Friday night at Sanford. The won and loss record for the year la the beat in many years at the high school. The credit for the winning season will be placed hi many places by the sidewalk quarterbacks. We think that the suceas In a small way is to the football program aa a whole. The 9th grade team and the JVs have played good ball for the past few years and this helps when they go out for the varsity team. This year Upchurch has had two teams that have met with success so the outlook for the future should be bright. We can't think of anything that builds school spirit like winning athletic teams. Only in three of Hoke County's 13 precincts did the majority of voters approve tlie issue. 70 votes were cast in Rockfish, with 35 being cast each way.
