ajtpa 1 . 7 The Hoke County News- Established 1928 The Hoke County Journal - Established 1905 VOLUME LXV NUMBER 33 RAEFORD, HOKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA $4 PER YEAR 10c PER COPY THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25, 1969 nn n n n mvrrm mrrrrrr a Around Town j BY SAM MORRIS The Key Club it Hoke County High School cleaned the roidiidei on the main highways leading into the city Monday. According to Raz Autry, ichool principal and a worker aito, the club collected 10 truck loads of trash during the morning work. This was a Tine project for the boys and they are to be commended for their work. J.W. Turlington was in the office last week and was singing high praise for the crewmen of Carolina Power & Light Co. who fixed the chain on the flag pole at the Raeford Elementary School. He said that James Baker of Hoke Oil was instrumental in getting the job done. The Christmas decorations that are up in Raeford this year are the best ever. Numerous citizens have commented to tliis newspaper about them. We think that a bouquet should be given to the Chamber of Commerce for the project. Younger Snead, Jr., president, stated Tuesday that anyone who hadn't and would like to give a donation on the decorations could send it to the clumber office. So get into tlie spirit and donate to the decoration fund. The candles that are in the medians on Main Street came about from a letter sent to the people that live there. It was sent out by talmadge Baker, farm agent, and a resident of Raeford and who lives on N. Main Street. Baker purcliased the candles and part of the letter to his neighbors follows: Dear Neighbor: While visiting in a neighboring town recently 1 learned of I most exciting activity wliich is done at Christmas. The residents of the area light their street by placing candles in paper bags which are 4 partially filled with sand to keep them in place. This U a custom of lighting the , -elmfs of' a neighborhood with candlelight to symbolize the bonfires the Slepherds built to light their wav to the manger in Bethlehem on the first Christmas Eve. This custom of "Lighting the Candles" is called LUM1NARIA which comes from the Spanish word meaning light. 1 have discussed with some of you the possibility of lighting our street on Christmas F.ve. Since time is of essence and every project must have a beginning point, 1 want to call on you to help light the medians on N. Main Street. We will begin tliis year by placing one line of candles down the middle of the median. I feel tliat everyone will enjoy this project and especially the fellowsliip during the lighting of the candles. The spirit of Christmas moved into my home last Friday after the family doubled in size. The tree was decorated and gifts wrapped and displayed. So to all tliat luve asked me about the hustle and bustle this is the answer of course, it is not as easy for Mary A. and myself to get a cur as it was before. , Holiday Closings Vary With Stores Most businesses in Raeford will close two days tliis week to observe Christmas. Most of Die businesses will re - open on Saturday morning. Chamber of Commerce Manager Harold Cillis indicated that there was no uniform closing policy among tlie Raeford Mercliants. Some, he said, would be closed only Christmas Day, re opening on Friday, while others would not be open for business until Monday morning. It looks as if everyone will just have to check on each individual store. Tlie News Journal will close at noon Wednesday and open its doors on Monday. Tlie paper will be published early again next week. All advertisers and correspondents are asked to have their copy ready one day earlier than tlie normal deadline. V 1 ! The Bloodmobile is scheduled for operation at the Raeford limed Methodist Church on Main Street between 1 1 a.m. and 5 p.m. With the medical staffing and the volunteer ladies of Raeford. the bloodmobile operation can fully process ISO blood donors during the one day operation in Rucford. Clyde L'pchurch. Jr., Chairman of the Red Cross in Hoke County , said Monday that Hoke County is currently at a deficit with the Regional Blood Center in Cliarlotte. Reasons for the deficit Cited by Upchurch were the unusually poor donor turnout September 24 when tlie Bloodmobile was last in Raeford, and the abnormally high blood usage by Hoke citizens during this month. Only 68 pints of blood were donated on September 24. At that time. Hoke County liad a blood shortage at tlie bloodbank of SI pints, leaving the county with the small balance of 18 pints to last for three months. United Fund Hits' Residents of Hoke County, while in hospitals in surrounding towns, last year required 362 pints of whole blood. An average of almost one pint per day. Lpchuich indicated that due to an unusually largo number of surgical patients from Hoke in area hospitals, the first 22 days of the month of December have really put a drain on the Hoke County blood account. The local Red Cross Chairman expressed hope that citizens of Raeford and Hoke County would contribute about 12S pints of blood on Monday. "It would really put us in good shape lor the next three months." Employees of Burlington Industries and people from the Sanitorium at McCain have historically been the strongest supporters ol the local bloodmobile. It is hoped by L'pchurch that their donations will be matched by others in Hoke County. L'pchurch urges everyone in this area to "Give the gilt of Life" by donating a pint of blood Monday, December 29, at the Raeford United Methodist Church between the hours of 1 1 a.m. and S p.m. Holt Gets Fifth Conviction; 90 Percent Mark Dupree Gives Stiff Sentence Walter "James Holt was found guilty in Hoke County District Court Friday of diiving under the influence, his fifth conviction on that offense, and was given a stiff sentence by Judge Joseph E.
