Bucks Add Two Victories; Play In Lumberton Friday i m a *5 .*v tse (?? t ' CARPENTER PUTS IT UP - Buck trapman Garley Carpenter gets a jump shot off against the Dark Horses Friday night. Other Bucks getting in position to rebound are Russell Davis (34) and Joe Bridges (52). The Hoke High Bucks ran their post ? Christmas winning streak to four games by edging Clinton 70-65 Friday night and ripping Rockingham 70-65 Friday night and ripping Rockingham 70-52, in a game played on the Rockets' homecourt Tuesday night. The local cagers built a 16 point lead at the end of the third quarter of play Friday night over conference rival Clinton and had to hang on for their first conference victory of the season. The Bucks managed to tally only orte field goal in the last quarter while the Dark Horses put 24 points on the scoreboard. Clutch foul shooting accounted for the Bucks other 11 points in the quarter. Coach Larry Phillips said after the game that it was always nice to win, but that he was very disappointed in his team's play in the fourth quarter. The team lias spent a great portion of their practice sessions this week concentrating on improving their play against the press. The practice obviously paid off, as the Bucks traveled to Rockingham Tuesday night and had to cope with both pressing and stalling tactics employed by the Rockets. The Bucks returned to Raeford with a 70-52 victory. Rockingham tried to slow the tempo of the game with a stall. Neither team scored for tfcc first three minutes. Several consecutive baskets by the Hoke players made the Rockets drop the stall maneuver. Getting several turnovers in the first quarter, as a result of their full court press, the Bucks jumped to an 11 point lead at the end of the first quarter. 17-6. Nine of the Bucks first quarter points were tallied by sophomore forward Russeil Davis, who Iras had a hot hand in the early stages of the Bucks' last four basketball games. The Bucks stretched their lead to a 25 point advantage at the end of the third quarter. Coach Phillips then benched his starters and allowed the alternates to play most of the fourth quarter. Joe Bridges was the leading scorer for the Bucks in each of their last two games, racking up 22 points against Clinton and 17 against Rockingham. Russell Davis accounted for 20 and 15 points. Davis has the pleasing habit of hitting several shots in a row. His scoring lias spearheaded the Bucks' attack in the first quarter of the Bucks' last two games. The Bucks travel to Lumberton Friday night to play the Pirates Some sportswriters feel the Pirates are not as strong this season as tliey usually are. In accessing the Lumberton team, Coach Phillips siad "they have fine coaching, they are always aggressive, and they are very 'veil disciplined, Lumberton wil be a tough team to beat, especially on their homecourt." Phillips added tliat lie would not be at all surprised if Lumberton tries to stall or presses his team Friday night. "We will continue to practice against the press" he concluded. The Bucks have an open date next Tuesday night and then travel to Dunn and Sanford before returning to their homecourt for a game aaainst Lumberton.
