THE NEWS JOURNAL RAEFORD, NORTH CAROLINA PAGE 8, SECTION I THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1970 Extension Urges Less Use Of DDT North Carolina farmers and other users of pesticides will be using much less DDT in the future if they follow new recommendations of the Agricultural Extension Service. Extension agents and specialists arc dropping 12 of the present 18 recommended uses for DDT. Less usage is also being recommended for three other chlorinated hydrocarbons -- aldrin, dicldrin, and endrin. Dr. Gerald Weekman, extension entomologist at North Carolina State University. said the new recommendations are being made in part "to reduce the build ? up that we arc not getting in our environment from the chlorinated hydrocarbons." Substitue chemicals are available for those uses of the chlorinated hydrocarbons which are being dropped. Therefore, no farmer or othei user of pesticides should be hurt by following the new recommendations, Weekman continued. Under its new recommendations, the agricultural Hxteosiqn. Service suggests that DDT b? oscd only for controlling: ?-bollworms and boll weevils on cotton; ??thrips, plant bugs and earworms on commercial flowers and shrubs; . ?-gall midge and corn earworms in greenhouses; -flea beetles on tobacco plant beds; -pure tip moths on shade trees; and -weevils in sweet potatoes. The new recommendations suggest that aldrin be used only for controlling billbugs and wireworms on corn, soil insects in commercial turf, pales weevils on commercial trees, and termites in homes and other buildings. Recommendations for dieldrin arc being restricted to the control of weevils in sweet potatoes, termites and powder - post beetles in wood, and plant bugs on apple trees. Recommendations for endrin are now restricted to the control of mice in apple orchards. Dr. Weckman said that the Agricultural Extension Service has been gradually dropping its recommendations for DDT and the other chlorinated hydrocarbons, and the action this year is a continuation of this process. This group of pesticides, he explained, lias come under increasing fire in recent years. Conservationists and other groups dislike them because they tend to spread to all parts of the environment and remain in some form for decades. Home Agent's SCHEDULE THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2:30 p.m. ?
