Army Regroups MOSs
Into 39 Career Fields
WASHINGTON (ANF) ?
The Department of the Army
(DA) has announced devel
opment of 39 Career Man
agement Fields (CMF) de
signed to improve career
planning and management of
enlisted personnel
Each CMF maps out a ca
reer progression pattern and
makes career promotion op
portunities within that field
more identifiable The new
system increases the oppor
tunity for a soldier to com
pete for promotion by en
abling him to maintain profi
ciency within his Military
Occupational Specialty
(MOS) and to plan his ca
reer within an MOS-related
career pattern.
Scheduled to become effec
tive July 1. 1970. the CMF
system has regrouped re
lated MOSs into 39 fields,
each based on compatibility
of skills and aptitudes, occu
pational similarity and or
ganizational unity. In the re
grouping process, no MOS
was revised, created or de
leted.
Each OJF, which can be
considered similar to a
branch for an officer or war
rant officer, is self-sustain
ing and provides for orderly
career progression in both
MOS and grade.
All but two CMFs allow
promotion through grade E9.
This will enable a soldier to
stay within a field and de
velop proficiency within that
field. In the two CMFs in
which progression to E9 is
not possible (they peak out
at grade E8), provisions have
been made to enable qualified
soldiers to achieve grade E9
through retraining in a re
lated CMF based on individ
ual desires, qualifications
and needs of the Army.
I)A Pamphlet 611-7, Ca
reer Planning for Army En
listed Personnel, to be pub
lished before the end of Fis
cal Year 1970, will describe
each CMF career progression
pattern and will carry im
plementing instructions for
field use.
