And Jaycees Want Signatures For Petition The N.C. National Guard and the N.C. Jaycees have joined furccs to obtain the signatures of all citizens on petitions to influcncc world opinion regarding American scrvicctnen held captive by Hanoi. Guardsmen, Jaycccs and members of veterans, civic and community organization will spend Thursday, June 18, dubbed "Signature Day," getting petitions signed to send to the Washington ambassadors of Denmark, France. India. Poland, Romania, Russia and Sweden. These seven nations, which have represented themselves as possessing influence in Hanoi, hopefully will make known the unanimity of North- .Carolina opinion against the treatment of captive U.S. servicemen. Competent evidence exists that American POW's have been subjected to deliberately inhumane treatment by Hanoi. They lack proper medical care and adequate food, and have been subjected to solitary confinement without cause. National Guard armories throughout the State will be opened to the public on Signature Day where citizens ma> sign the seven petitions. Gurardsmcn and Jaycces will be on duty throughout the day to assist those signing the petitions. Citizens who are unable to stop by the armory on June 18 should call the aimory or contact the local Jaycees. Arrangements are being made to have the petitions available several days prior to Signature Day. Major General Fcrd L. Davis, The Adjutant General of North Carolina, told Guardsmen recently. "To me the most damning fact is that Hanoi has consistently refused to identity the prisoners, contrary to the Geneva conventions signed by North Vietnam along with 119 other nations. "The families of these men have not received information, and cannot send mail or packages to them. The names of American POW's released bv Hanoi arc given only tor obvious propaganda purposes. The general, who announced at his April 30 news conference that the Guard would be obtaining signatures, also said "regardless of an individual's feelings toward American involvement in Southeast Asia, all of us should do everything possible to obtain the names of those held captive and to secure proper treatment of our men." Bill Hobbs, President of the N.C. Jaycees, declared. "We (the Jaycees) consider it an honor and privilege to work hand-in-hand with the North Carolina National Guard in Signature Day activities. It is irrelevent whether we as Jaycees, or citizens of North Carolina, agree or disagree with our present policy on Southeast Asia. We are concerned," Hobbs continued, "that hundreds of American servicemen are at present being denied contact with their families and being treated in an inhumane manner. Through this program we seek your support by signature asking for more humane treatment of our fellow Americans in prisoner of war camps in North Vietnam." Colonel William P. Keeton. Jr. of Raleigh was named by General Davis to serve as the Guard Project Officer while Tom Bradshaw, also of Raleigh, was named by Hobbs as the Jaycee Project Officer. In addition to Governor Bob Scott, who had indorsed this program, and jhe National Guard Bureau in Washington, D.C., others already supporting Signature Day include the AMVETS (the American Veterans), the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the Rotarians. the VFW' (Veterans of Foreign Wars), the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Veterans of World War I of the USA, the kiwanians, the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), the American Legion, and the N.C. Home Agent Has Advice For Proper Canning Let's can all low acid foods so as to kill harmful microorganisms and spores. To do this follow recommend a lions from N.C. Fx tension Specialist or U.S. Department of. Agriculture You may call the Home Agents Office 875-2162 to obtain copies of these recommendations The pressure canncr is the method to use for low acid foods. Be sure to use only this method. One type of microorganism - botulinus - has caused deaths from canned foods that were not adequately processed. Unless all the spores of botulinus are destroyed by using high temperature (above 212) that is obtained under pressure, the remaining spores can grow and during their growth, develop one of the most powerful poisons known to man. String beans and squash arc available right now. Use pressure canncr for both of these vegetables. If you can in pressure saucepan, increase processing time by 20 minutes. Have your canner checked every year lo be sure your guage is accurate. J.K. McNeill III Graduates At Elon John Knox McNeill III. son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. McNeill.
