Engagement Announced Miss Sharon Lynn Sawyer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter S. Sawyer of Route 3, Raeford, who announce her engagement to Ernest Stephen Duncan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Duncan of Route 2, Raeford. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Sawyer is a student at Fashion Institute of America m Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Duncan is serving with the U.S. Navy, stationed at Little Creek, Va. Lt. Col and Mrs. Richard Coker and daughters of Annandale, Va. are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gulledge. Lin Webb left last Thursday for National Guard basic training at Ft. Dix.NJ. Billy Gilmore and Harvey McDuffie are at Camp Polk, La. for National Guard basic training and Kenneth Kluttz is taking his basic training at Ft. _ Jackson, S.C. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence McNeill left Tuesday for a trip to the, mountains. Major and Mrs. W.T. Niven and family have moved to Shaw AFB, Sumter, S. C. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Ferguson and Eugene over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Archie T. Ferguson and children of Greensboro, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Ferguson and daughter, Mrs. Norman H. Gordon and son, Norman Jr! and daughter Rene of Durham and Mr. and Mrs. John Fly. John Fly spent Saturday and Sunday with Ins mother Mrs. Eulla Fly in Rocky Mount. Susanna Gatbn of Charlotte is spending the week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Gatlin. Miss Georgia Franklin of High Point was weekend guest of Mrs. J.L. Warner. Paul Currie has returned to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., after a month's vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Scott Currie Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hensley of Massilon, Ohio, were here for the weekend with their daughter and family. Dr. and Mrs. Bob Townsend and children. Saturday guests of the Townsends were Dr. and Mrs. M.B. Pate of Lumberton and Bill Townsend of Fayetteville. Mr. and Mrs. James Weaver will leave tomorrow to spend the weekend at Lake Waccamaw with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smith of Fayetteville. Mrs. David Scott Currie Jr. and Mrs. Bobby Carter spent Tuesday in Raleigh. They went especially to see their niece, Mary Lynn Currie, who is a patient at Wake Memorial Hospital. Mrs. William J. Huston and son Jeffrey left last Thursday for Puerto Rico to join her husband who is stationed there with the U.S. Air Force. Mrs. Huston is the former Joyce Ann Phillips. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conoly visited Mrs. Wiley Hinnant in Wilson on Thursday. Mrs. Jessie Davis of Greensboro and C.R. Scott Jr. of Slier City were weekend quests of Mr. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conoly spent Sunday through Wednesday in Atlanta, Ga., visiting her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Reynolds. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Matthews visited their son Grayson and family last week in Elkhorn, Wise. Mr. and Mrs. Younger Snead Jr. and sons spent the holidays at Topsail Beach with his parents. Mrs. Ed Lee of Dunn and Mrs. Kathleen Wilson spent from Wednesday to Saturday in Black Mountain with their sister. Mrs. Lillian Blue McEachern. Mrs. McEachern returned to her daughter's home in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Peoples and daughter Pam spent the weekend in Washington, N.C. with their son - in - law and daughter, Mr.and Mrs. John D. Stokes Jr. They also attended the Fourth of July celebration in Belhaven and visited the historic town of Bath on Sunday. Jeff Conoly of Fayetteville is spending the week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Conoly. Shapiro-Roberts Wedding Sunday Miss Mary Eloise Roberts became the bride of Dr. Tom Shapiro on July 3 in San Francisco, Calif. Relatives and dose friends attended. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Chandler Roberts of Raeford. Parents of the bridegroom are Dr. and Mrs. Fred Shapiro of Chicaso II). The bride is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. degree in Nursing. She is now head nurse of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Shapiro graduated from Reed College In Portland, Oregon and the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He is now a fourth year resident in surgery at the University of California Medical Center. After July 15 the newly weds will be at home at 2486, Forty ? Fourth Avenue, San Francisco, Calif. Sandhills Club Meets July 16 Featuring Albert Long, Durham native as guest speaker, the July 16th luncheon of the Sandhills Christian Women's Club will be held at The Country Club of North Carolina at twelve noon. Mr. Long, a graduate of U.N.C. and presently Sales Representative for Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company, is a speaker for Fellowship of Christian Athletes Organization of which he is on the National Advisory Council. He works one weekend every month with Teen Crusade Inc. Mrs. James F. Lawson will bring the special feature on "Instant Golf. Mrs. Barbara Geer will present the Pinecrest Ensemble in a program of special music. A free babysitter will be at The United Methodist Church, Midland Road, Southern Pines. Blue-Scarangello Wedding June 27 Miss Vivian Frances Scarangello and Frank McRae Blue Jr. were married June 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Protestant Chapel at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune. Chaplain W.E. Donan Jr. officiated. The bride is the daughter of First Lieutenant and Mrs. Anthony F. Scarangello of Tarawa Terrace and the bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Blue of Raeford. Miss Laurie Kuzan of Jacksonville was only attendant for the bride. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a ballerina length gown of white crepe fashioned with tiny pearl buttons on the bodice and bell - shaped lace sleeves. Her shoulder length veil of illusion fell from a crown of white daisies and she carried a bouquet of white daisies and yellow carnations entwined with yellow and white streamers. The bridegroom's father served as best man and ushers were Stanley Malcolm Koonce of Raeford and David Lollar of Raleigh. The bride is a graduate of Camp Lejeune High School and is a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is a member of the American Junior Dental Hygienists Association. Mr. Blue is a graduate of Farewell Party For Mrs. Niven Mrs. Sam Copper and Mrs. Martin Webb gave a dessert bridge Wednesday night of last week at the Copper home as a farewell honor for Mrs. W.T. Niven. Mrs. Niven and her family moved to Sumter, S.C. this week. When guests arrived lime ice and brownies were served at three tables. The hostesses served candies and cheese crackers during the game. Mrs. Niven was presented with a gift of silver and crystal. Prizes went to Mrs. David Scott Curtie for high score, to Mrs. Younger Snead Jr. for bingo and to Mrs. Dave Russell for consolation. The couple is at home at Tanglwylde Apartments, South Boston, Va. The bride's parents entertained with a reception at the Camp Lejeune Officers' Club. A rehearsal dinner was given by the bridegroom's parents Friday night at the Base Steak House. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dickson and Robert, Anne of Charlotte, Paul III of Fayetteville, and Skip and John spent the holidays at Topsail Beach. McKinnon-Scoff Vows Spoken In Virginia Miss Peggy Lee Scott became the bride of Frederick Lavont McKinnon in a two o'clock ceremony July 4 at the home of the bride in Newport News, Va. The Rev. V. Harris officiated for the double ring vows. Mr. and Mrs. John Scott of 631 31st Street, Newport News are parents of the bride. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willie J. McKinnon of Raeford. Miss Shari Scott was maid of honor for her sister. She wore a white satin dress with pink cummerbund. Child attendants were Judith Scott and Willie Kirby. The father of the bride gave her in marriage. She wore a white satin gown designed with alencon lace re - embroidered with seed pearls. She wore a white lace veil, long white gloves, and a pearl necklace. Her bouquet was an arrangement of white carnations and ribbon bows encircled with green leaves. Following the ceremony the bride's parents entertained with a reception at their home. The bride is a 1970 graduate j of St. Augustine's College in Raleigh where the bridegroom is a rising junior. Baker's Dozen Bridge Club Mrs. Dave Russell and Mrs. Neill McFadyen Jr. were co-hostesses for the Baker's Dozen Bridge Club Thursday night at the Russell home. They served parfait when guests arrived and Cokes and snacks during play. Mrs. Younger Snead Jr. won high score prize and Mrs. Jay Phillips received the second high award. Sojka III of Scotsdale, Arizona, is today announced by her parents. 1' Miss Berry is a graduate of Hoke High School and Fayetteville Technical Institute School of Practical Nursing. She is employed by Masses' Hill Medical Clinic, Fayetteville. Mr. Sojka urn graduated from Lakewood High School. Lake wood. New Jersey, and is employed by Faseo Industries in Fayetteville. An August ninth wedding is planned at ^Tabernacle Baptist Church, Rockfish. Mark Weaver Birthday Party Mark Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Weaver, celebrated his ninth birthday with a party on Monday afternoon at his home. After the guests played games they were served birthday cake, ice cream, and Cokes. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bethune and family returned to their home in Tampa, Fla. on Tuesday. They were all guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lacy'McFadyen.
