Social Security News
By: C.V. Shelton,
Field Representative with the
Fayetteville Social Security Officc
Most of you arc receiving
Social Security checks and who
are age 65 or over, I am sure
you noticed that your check
this month was SI .30 less than
the one you received last
month. Why was this the case?
The reason for this reduction
in your check was that your
?hare of the premium on the
medical insurance part of
Medicare went up. Why it went
up should be obvious to
anyone who has received any
medical treatment lately. The
cost of doctors' services,
ambulances services, laboratory
and X-ray services when you
are hospitalized - these major
items covered by the medical
insurance * have all gone up at
ta faster rate than the other
Items we need to be able to
keep on living in these times.
It should be remembered
that you pay half of the
premiums on your medical
insurance. The other half is
paid for you by the Federal
government from the general
revenues it takes in. Since your
share of these premiums went
up, the government's share
went up as well, by the same
amount ? SI .30 monthly. Your
S5.30 per month plus the
government's SS 30 is put into
a Medical Insurance Trust
Fund which is used to help pay
the medical bills of the persons
who liuve the medical
insurance coverage.
At this point, you may be
wondering exactly what you
are now paying this SS.30
monthly premium for ? how do
you benefit from this payment
and is it worthwhile to
continue the payment ?
MELON TIME ? ? Willie McPhaul, who farms near Antloch, holds
a ripe one for good summer eating. The watermelon season began
here the end of June and is in full swing now. McPhaul claims the
first ripe watermelon in the county on June 27.

WHAT IS MAN?
Lesson for July 19,1970
The birth of a human being
is one of the most common,
yet at the same time most
miraculous and mysterious
frocesses of God's creation,
he more that science learns
about it, the more we stand in
awe at this evidence of God's
creative masterpiece.
Consider facts such as these:
A new human being begins
as a tiny cell which in
266-or-so days increases to a
fantastically complex organism
of 200 million cells - a billion
times greater than its original
weight.
In the nucleus of this single
cell is a kind of coded blue
print for the stage-by-stage
development of a complete
human body.
When the baby is born it is
pushed into the world by a
one-hundred-pound propulsive
force.
In a few short seconds the
new-born baby must make a
great many unbelievable drastic
adjustments from a cozy
temperature of 98 degrees F.
to a room temperature of some
twenty degrees lower; from a
totally dark environment to
one of blinding light; from a
complete dependence for
oxygen and blood upon the
mother to the sudden,
unpracticed use of its own
lungs and heart for that
purpose.
No wonder man is called
God's greatest creation!
Yet, fantastically wonderful
as is the physical creation of
man he is looked upon as the
crown of God's creation for
still a greater reason: what he is
rather than how he is made.
The writer of Genesis says it
one way: "So God created man
in his own image..." (Genesis
1:27). The writer of Hebrews,
quoting the psalmist, says it
another: "Thou didst make
him a little lower than the
angels" (Hebrews 2:7). Both of
these men are making
aDoroximately the same
affirmation: there is a likeness,
kinship, or similarity between
the personality of man the and
basic personal nature of God.
This ibes not mean that
man is the same as God or
equhi to him in any way. It
does mean, however, that man
in his very essence or that
which makes him man bears
in an incomplete and finite
way the characteristics which
we find in a complete and
infinite way in God. As Reuel
Howe lias put it, "Blurred and
distorted though the image of
God in man is, still the mark ot
the hand of the Divine
Craftsman is on him."
We may "see" God in nature
"hear" him in the sounds of
the earth, and find his
"footprints" in a hundred
thousand different places, but
in man we get the most
accurate picture of all. In one
man - Jesus Christ - the
picture was not even blurred or
distorted.
There is another reason why
we call man God's greatest
creation. Not only is man
exalted in what he is created to
be, but also in what he is
created to do. Man is created
to put "everything in
subjection under his feet." He
it intended to rule over the rest
of creation for the Creator.
There are then two facts
that we must note about the
nature and purpose of man.
First, there is man's privileged
position in regard to tne rest of
creation. No other creature has
been so blessed as man. What u
privilege to be created with a
kinship to God and a mandate
to rule God's creation for him.
There is a second fact, lor
with the privilege there is also a
responsibility too, Man is
blessed by God so that lie may
be i blessing. He is given
powers, advantages, and
endowments so that he may
fulfill God's plan and purpose.
He Is therefore the creature
with the highest privileges and
also the highest responsibilities,
That's why he's called the
"crown ot God's creation "
That's what man is.

What size calf should a cow
wean - A rule of thumb some
people use is that a cow should
wean a calf weighing roughly V4
as much as her own weight.
This is a fair guide up to a cow
weight of 1000 lbs. Above this
weight the cow is not quite as
efficient in the use of her teed
as a greater portion is needed
for maintainencc. Animal
Husbandrymen at Oklahoma
State University worked up the
following guide using TDN and
cow size to compare weaning
weight.
The cow weight and weaning
weight of calves is as follows:
1000 ?? 500, 1200 - 572.
1400 ?? 643, 1600 - 712.
Be careful - Many of the
seed for planting on the market
now have been treated with
chemicals and it is
recommended that they be
used only for that purpose.
The seed should not be used as
feed grains and most certainly
should not be placed where
children may come in contact
or play in them.
Persons not knowing, may
consider using these seeds in
making seed mosaics, since
they are many times of bright
colors. This is not
recommended and should not
be done. The primary purpose
of the color is to show that the
seeds have been treated. If seed
that you plan to use urc in
question as to whether they
have been treated, do not use
them.
