All-America Selection# we the result# of the only authentic prelntroductory testing and cooperative rating of new flower and vegetable eeed varieties for North America. Sponsored by the garden seed Industry of the United States and Canada, entries are received from private commercial and public in stitutional plant breeders torn H 0, a,, (rM_ AAS Is a non-profit ed ucational institution. self perpetuated by its Council of fUd*?8, wh0 are responsible for their trial grounds, eval uations of merit, and for the performance of each entry under a wide variety of soil and climatic conditions. So much for the background material, except to tell you that gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded baaed on the evaluations made by the Council of Judges of the AAS. The All-America flower winners for 1971 are: two zinnias, one dl am thus, one hibiscus, one snapdragon, and one hollyhock. The two zinnia varieties. ''Peter Pan Plum" and "Peter Pan Pink", broke all previous All-America Selection re cords. Both scored higher than any other entries In the almost 40 years of Judging flower and vegetable vari eties. Both received 1971 gold medal awards. Giving gold medals to two flowers In one year is quite unusual. In fact the last time this was done was In 1935. The last zinnia to receive a gold medal was the variety "Thumbellna" In 1963. The two new varieties are reported to be markedly su perior as they combine large flower size with dwarf pluit height. They are the best zinnias yet for bedding plant handling as peat pot trans plants. They are easy to start outside and give home owners a long season of fine bloom. Individual flowers measure from 3 to 4 Inches across and are excellent for border planting In the land scape. "Peter Pan Plum" Is a fine lavender-rose or plum color, "Peter Pan Pink" is coral pink, almost a two tone. with deeper salmon rose at the center, changing to lighter salmon-pink in the outer petals. Both varieties are fully double. We will continue next week. Legals NOTICF.
