MdnnU The Bible Study group of Tabernacle Church met Monday a.m. with Mrs. Roscoe Bundy. The Mission in Action Boup met Monday night with rs. Carl Strickland. The Rev. Berry Barbour, pastor of Parker and Sandy Grove Methodist Church, Ereached at Philippi Church ist Sunday a.m. before going to his regular appointment at Sandy Grove. A movie illustrating the importance of faith was shown at Galatia Church Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. James Wright and children Mike, Margie and Donnie of Birmingham, Ala. visited relatives in Raleigh and Durham before coming to Rockfish last Tuesday. While here they spent some time with Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Brock, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Bundy and families and other relatives. Mrs. James Culp got home Sunday night after she and her husband had been in Clanton, Ala. nearly 2 weeks. He remained in Clanton with his mother because of the critical illness of his stepfather, Willie F. Poole, who was not expected to live. Wanda Sue Stephens of Rt. 2, Raeford spent New Years night with her aunt Miss Nellie McFadyen. Mrs. Gerald Pittman's mother Mrs. Gertrude Holland and her sister Miss Bernice Holland of High Point spent the Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Pittman and children, Rene, Gerald, Jr. and Samantha. Rene went home with her grandmother Mrs. Holland and spent the week. Mrs. Annie Belle Odom spent the Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mull of Hopewell, Va. Mrs. Mull is Mrs. Odom's daughter, Evelyn. Mrs. Will Monroe got home from the hospital just in time for Christmas and Mr. and Mrs. Monroe had all their children and grandchildren with them for Christmas day. They were Mr. and Mrs. Minor McGougan and Mr. and Mrs. Larry McGougan of St. Pauls, Miss Faye McGougan of E.C.U., Greenville, Mrs. Tracy Monroe and children Teny, Nancy, Pamela and Jeffrey, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wood and children Debbie and Clyde, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Monroe and children, Lynn and Chuck of Fayetteville, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Monroe and children Jennie, Wayne and Sheila of Rt. 2, Raeford. Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Everett had all their children and 1 ?andson with them on New ears day. They were Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Hatcher, Mrs. Alex McBryde and Mrs. C.W. Boone. On Saturday, their guests were Mr. and Mrs. J.H. McPhail and Mrs. John Racklcy of Fayetteville. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Loflin of Denton, who were enroute home from Florida, stopped by for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Tracy Everett last Thursday. The Loflins lived near the Everetts some years ago and they were good friends. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Will Monroe last Sunday p.m. were Mr. and Mrs. Graham Monroe and Miss Sandra Blue of Raeford. Mrs. Grace Niven of Wagram spent Christmas and all last week with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Monroe and children. She also visited Mr. and Mrs. Will Monroe. Mr. and Mrs. James E. Mclnnis of Fayetteville were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. A.A. Mclnnis and Thomas Mclnnis. They all visited relatives in Scotland County Sunday pjn. Mr. and Mrs. William Wright and son Johnny and Mrs. Robert Turner took "Kim" Miller home Sunday after she spent a week with them. They spent the day with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Miller of Charleston, S.C. Mrs. CS. Pickett of Gallup Acres visited Mr. and Mrs. Harold Tillman and her uncle Fj\. Wright, Mrs. NJ. Ritter and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard and Mrs. C.H. Dove Sunday p.m. She was accompanied by her 2 youngest children Ricky and Cherri and they also visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Wright. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Panin of Detroit, Mich, spent Christmas holidays, Saturday to Monday, with her parents Maj. and Mrs. Ed Willis and sons David, Lawrence and Charles. Guests of Joe Monroe last Thursday and Friday were Mr. and Mrs. Tim Kennedy of Columbia, S.C. He is a ministerial student at the Lutheran Seminary and she is a teacher in Columbia. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Monroe and Mrs. Floyd Monroe took their son Joe back to HickorV Sunday and their son Ronald went back to Greenville. Guests of Mrs. NJ. Ritter Sunday p.m. were her cousins Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Lee and Mrs. Perry Jackson of Dunn. . Mr. and Mrs. James Denton of Fayetteville were supper guests of Mrs. Belle Ritter Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Demont Long, Mr. and Mrs. Cary Lee Quick and daughter Debra Ann ofRt. 2, Raeford were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Chason and son Larry Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Quick's infant daughter, who is in an incubator at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, was reported doing fine at last account. Mrs. Ethel D. Gibson and her sisters Mrs. W.H. Scheel of Lumber Bridge and Mrs. W.B. McDiarmid of Raeford attended funeral services for their cousin, Curtis Freeman, in Rockingham last Friday morning. , Mrs. Gibson spent Saturday with her sister Mrs. Schdl and they visited Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bishop at Loris, S.C. Sunday. Mrs. Gibson was associated with Mr. and Mrs. Bishop when she worked at Samarcand some years ago and she was invited to visit them at Loris, S.C. Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Wood and Mrs. Floyd Monroe were supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Monroe oand sons Joe and Ronald on New Years night but they didn't have the hog jowl and black eyed peas so they must not be superstitious. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koonce, Mrs. Mary Mclnnis and Thomas Mclnnis had black eyed peas for supper at the Mclnnis home, but substituted ham, brought over by Mrs. Koonce, for the hog jowl so they must be only half superstitious. Ronald Monrcj, student at E.C.U. in Greclvillc was a dinner gucn of his grandparents Ms and Mrs. A.W. Wood Sumty. Mr. and Mrs. Tiomas McColl and children Dijie. Kim and Kevin went wirtt Mrs. S.N. McColl to Mt. Qlivc Sunday. They all returned Sunday p.m. except Mrs. S.N. McC??l| who stayed for a lonier visit with her sisters Mrs. (Sa Komegay. Mrs. Ruth Martin and Miss Flora McLaurin. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Miller came home Monday after several days visiting with Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Vaughn of Atlanta. Ga. Mis. Miller went to Atlanta on Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Floyd Monroc*s granddaughter Judy Gillis was among the students at Appalachian Stale University who made the Dean's last before Christmas. Mrs. Adelyne Johnson of Puppy Creek spent from Saturday after Christmas to the next Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. William Wagoner and ' children of Sanford. Dr. and Mrs. Varnik Bombalepc and sons Halis and John of Wilson spent New Years day and Saturday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jo^a Lovctte. Mr. and Mrs. Wallet Caddell of Raeford visited Mrs. Luther Lilcs, who is a patient at Community Hospital in Loris. S.C., last Saturday. David Upchurch Nominated For Morehead Scholarship David Tuttle Upchurch is one of 23 nominees from District III for the Morehead Awards who will be interviewed Jan. 8 in Elizabethtown by the District III Morehead Selection Committee. Six finalists will be chosen from the district to appear in Chapel Hill March 4-8 for interviews with the Central Morehead Selection Committee. Each of the state's ten Morehead Awards district committees will select six finalists to be interviewed in Chapel Hill along with 52 nominees from 26 private preparatory schools. The Morehead Foundation's Board of Trustees makes the final selection of winners. Hugh G. Chatham of F.lkin is chairman. Members are Alan T. Dickson of Charlotte, Frank Borden Hanes of Winston - Salem, Richard T. Chatham, Jr. of Elkin and Dr. Robert Cluett of York University in Toronto, Canada. District III is composed of Hoke, Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland. Harnett, Lee, Moore, New Hanover, Richmond, Robeson and Scotland counties. Morehead Awards provide all ? expense paid undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. With the increase in tuition and other education expenses, the Morehead Foundation Trustees have increased the value of the award to S2.25U per year, making the four ? year award for N.C. residents $9,000. The Awards were established in 1951 by the late John Motley Morehead, a UNC graduate and native North Carolinian. He resided in Rye. N.Y. until his death in 1965.
