Bullard opened the trunk, Monroe said, and showed him three shotguns, and some tools. The car, Monroe said Bullard told him, belonged to Sgt. Conner and that Bullard had taken Conner to work that day and was going to clean up the car for him. Monroe said he released Bullard and kept the car. He asked Bullard to have Sgt. Conner come for the car, however he said he did not see Conner when he got the car. Raeford police officer Leonard Wiggins testified that he drove back from Antioch Women Are Sponsors Mrs. J.M. Greater Insurance Prote ction Locally (Special to The News ? Journal) NEW YORK, Mar. 13 - As happens in times of recession, when people are more concerned than usual about their future, residents of Hoke County took steps in the past year to bolster their financial security. They tightened up on their non - essential expenditures, put more of their disposable cash into their savings bank accounts, more into life insurance and health insurance Dr. Cayce To Speak On Dreams Charles Thomas Cayce, Ph.d., will speak at Terry Sanford High School auditorium on Friday, March 26 at 8:00 o'clock p.m., Fayetteville, Admission will be SI.SO for adults and S.75 for student!. His topic will be Dreams and Understanding of Self based on the Edgar Cayce readings. Dr. Cayce's lecture is sponsored by the Association for Research and Enlightenment, Inc. the organization with headquarters at Virginia Beach which is preserving, studying and presenting the Edgar Cayce headings. Many people are familiar with it from having read EDGAR CAYCE. THE SLEEPING PROPHET, by Jess Stern; THERE IS A RIVER, by Thomas Sugrue, and other widely received books on the subject. Dr. Cayce currently works ,with the youth activities for the Cayce organization at Virginia Beach, Virginia. A psychologist specializing in work with children, he has just returned from two years in Europe where he was teaching psychology with the University of Maryland and consulting for the State Department with the Agency for International Development. Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness, is an eye disease that can strike without warning or pain. Persons over 40 are in the high risk group and are urged to attend the clinic. A simple blood test will be given to screen for diabetes. An eye bank station will also be available at the clinic for information on donating eyes for transplants. Fayetteville with Bullard in Conner's car after city police had served warrants on the pair for the safe cracking and larceny. J.C. Barrington took the stand again and testified that he had questioned Bullard about the breakin after they got to the Hoke County jail. Barrington said Bullard told him he didn't know anything about the breakin and that the guns were in the car when he kept it to clean it up. Barrington said that Bullard asked him to get a pack of cigarettes from the car and when he did so, he found another screwdriver in the truck, which he also sent to Raleigh. At this point in the hearing, the solicitor, Lynn Johnson, introduced the screwdriver as evidence. Charles Kirkland, Fayetteville attorney defending Conner, stipulated that the screwdriver could be introduced but was not to apply to his client. Kirkland had objected at the beginning of the htal to any testimony against Bullard being used against Conner also and the court had sustained him. To this point, there had been no evidence introduced against Conner. Barrington was then asked by the solicitor if they questioned Conner. "The only statement 1 heard Conner make," Barrington told the court, "was that he knew the guns were there and that he bought them from a man in Fayetteville between 11 or 12 Sunday night (Jan. 10). He said he bought them from two subjects driving a 1955 car. I believe he said he paid S60 for them and thought he was getting a good buy. He said he bought the tools from a service station." Kirkland argued that the state had failed to prove its case against Conner but Judge Dupree disagreed. "Your client was in right good shape until the last witness took the stand and said the defendent said he purchased the guns before the robbery." After ruling in the case, Dupree criticized the police department for their handling of the case. "I hope this sounds like constructive criticism instead of just criticism," he said. "But I say this loud and clear. Anytime you have a case of this importance, you should work with the State Bureau of Investigation. That's why we pay our taxes and have that body of men trained. "This case was very poorly worked up," he said. and reduced their instalment debt. As a result, they entered the current year with more safeguards than ever, especially with respect to cash savings and life insurance. For the local community as a whole, life insurance holdings are now placed at more than 555,558,(XX), a record high. Data on the number of policy holders and the extent of their coverage is given for each of the states and for the United States as a whole in the current Life Insurance Fact Book and in other reports. They show that families boosted their protection in this direction by an average of SI ,600 during the past year. As a result of the large increase, the overall amount of life insurance in force in the United States reached SI.4 trillion (yes, trillion), or nearly 10 percent more than in 1969. In the State of North Carolina alone, the reports show, the total is S 28,531,000,000, as against S26,418,000,000 a year ago. For the majority of families, there is a direct relationship, it is found, between their annual Income and the amount of insurance they carry. In North Carolina, the amount now held is equivalent to about 26.6 months of after - tax income. Applied to Hoke County and to the average income listed for the area, the life insurance holdings locally are an estimated $14,450 per family. This is well above the average per family in many sections of the country. Another factor accounting for the surge in insurance protection is the big Increase, recently, in the number of marriages taking place. These young couples, with their new responsibilities, are quick to provide themselves with such protection. Many medical reports show an association between heavy smoking and the birth of underweight babies, the March of Dimes reports.
