i's Your Answer - MP By Bernadette Hoyle ?w*a3r ? ' dation is no respecter of ststus. Retarded to families in every strata of society ? rich and and well educated ? and all warrant our concern How many mentally retarded are there in North Carolina? About 150,000. Exactly what is meant by the term "mentally retarded?" The QtanUlly retarded are children and adults who are limited in thtfr ability .to learn. They are generally socially immature and inadequate, and a great many are further handicapped by ?motional and physical disabilities. What causes mental retardation? Defects in the developing embryo, deprivation in early childhood, disease of the nervous system, toxins and poisons, and by brain injury early in life. It is also thought to be associated with prematurity. Are there many retarded persons in the United States? Yes! About 6 million ? or roughly 3 percent of the population - are mentally retarded. My baby is four months old and is slow in using his hands and feet and in "pulling up." How can we determine if he is retarded? Take him to the Screening Clinic at your local Health Department. They will determine whether he should be taken to a Developmental Evaluation Clinic for tests. (Address questions to: Bernadette Hoyle, Public Information Officer, N.C. Shelton, Field Representative Fayetteville Social Security Office Women workers under Social Security often wonder, '"Of what advantage is Social Security to me, since my husband works and I could qualify on his record?" There are many advantages to the women who has worked under Social Security, in addition to those to be derived from her husband's work record. The three basic considerations are these: 1. In the event of the death of a woman worker, Social Security will make monthly Social Security payments to her minor children, a disabled child or any of her children who are between the ages of 18 and 22 and who are full ? time students. These payments are made despite the fact that prior to her death her husband was supporting the children. 2. if the woman worker becomes disabled, she may qualify for monthly disability benefits and there would be supplemenial payments for any qualified children as explained in 1 above. These payments are also made despite the fact that the husband is in the household and able to support his wife and their children. 3. Both men and women may elect to receive retirement benefits from Social Security at age 62. However, in the case of the woman worker who has worked fairly regularly up to age 62, she would be entitled to a larger payment on her own work record than she could get as a wife on her husband's account. Also, in the case of the deceased woman worker, there is always a lump sum death payment which is payable to her surviving "living with" widower or to whoever has paid or is responsible for her burial expenses. For further information on this subject, call the Fayetteville Social Security office at 483-2661.
