EASTER MUSIC- The Chapel Chorus of Ft. Bragg presents "The Seven Ust Words" by Haydn In a program at the Raeford Presbyterian Church Friday.
Harlan Duenow Conductor
Chapel Chorus To Present
"Seven Last Words" Here
The Chapel Chorus of Fort
Bragg will perform at the
Raeford Presbyterian Church
on Friday evening, April 9,
1971 at 8:00 p.m. The
composition being performed
will be the "Seven Last Words"
by J. Haydn. The work
features a vocal quartet and
mixed chorus. The original
version of the music was
written for string quartet. The
reason for such work to be
requested of Haydn was
meditation purposes. Each
musical portion was performed
after a discourse of each
spoken word for the
congregation to meditate
during the liturgical Good
Friday services. Each of the
words are sung by the chorus
with the exception of the fifth
word which is introduced by a
tenor solo. Following the
statement of each word, a
discussion of the word is sung
by the chorus.
The quartet portions fo the
composition will be sung by
Trudy Johnson, soprano; Gerri
Cathcart, alto; Willard Griffin,
tenor; and Bryan Miller, bass.
All four soloists have been very
active in various musical groups
in North Carolina. They are all
members of the Cumberland
Chorale and have been previous
soloists with the Chapel
Chorus.
The Fort Bragg chorus had
the distinction for many years
of being the only all volunteer
chorus to rehearse and perform
for a complete concert season
in the entire United States
Army. Since their birth in
1963 the chorus has made
three long - playing records and
performed numerous times on
area television stations. They
have performed the complete
"Messiah" with orchestra
which is another first with
army musical groups. They
have the distinction of
performing "The Passion and
The Nativity According to St.
Luke by Randall Thompson.
Their normal concert season
includes four major concerts at
Fort Bragg plus engagements at
other church functions and
communities.
John E. Williams, Professor
of Organ at St. Andrews
College of Laurinburg, N.C.
will accompany the group. Mr.
Williams has been rehearsal and
performance accompanist with
the chorus the past four
seasons. Harlan F. Duenow, has
directed the group for the past
eight seasons. He is the organist
? choirmaster of the Main Post
Chapel at Fort Bragg and is the
musical director of the Fort
Bragg Playhouse. He formed,
and conducts the Cumberland
Chorale of Fayetteville, N.C.
and is presently serving as
president of Fayetteville
Symphony Association.
This year's presentation of
the work by Haydn will mark
their second performance.
They first presented the
"Words" to the Fayetteville -
Fort Bragg Community in
1968. The public is invited to
attend the performance.

The possibility of
conducting a one or two week
Cotton Classing Short Course
at Morehead City, N.C. in late
June for producers, ginners,
shippers and mill employees is
being considered. The course
would cover instructions and
practice in cotton grading,
stapling and machine testing
using micronaire and Pressley
equipment. It will take a
minimum of 15 students to
make the course possible.
Tuition for the two weeks
will be from J25.00 -
530.00. Persons interested in
enrolling should contact the
county agent's office before
April 15, 1971.
Cotton growers should
consider several things this
coming year. (1) There may be
a problem of a short supply.
This could escalate prices too
high and could cause a shortage
of certain grades and staples.
The results could be that
synthetics will gain ground. (2)
D.D.T. will probably be used
this year but hearings will be
held shortly on the subject. (3)
A grower can produce up to
10% more acreage, over and
above allotment. (4) Herbicides
should be incorporated 2-3
weeks before planting for
better stand maintenance and
early weed control. (5)
Planting on beds provides early
germination of seed and more
vigorous seedling development.
(6) Apply minimum nitorgen
at planting (12-20 lbs.). Early
nitrogen stress will enhance
early fruitinR. A publication
"Tarheel Timberman" is a new
newsletter for the professional
logging and pulpwood
contractors. It is being
published by the Agricultural
Extension Service at N.C. State
University. The purpose is to
help logging contractors
develop business management
skills and provides a place to
answer questions on any
subject related to logging and
timber management.
Questions concerning the
publication can be answered by
County Extension Agents.
