Commendation Medal for
meritorious service in Vietnam.
Sergeant Cummings, an
aircraft maintenance specialist,
distinguished himself while
assigned to the 612th Tactical
Fighter Squadron at Phan Rang
Air Base.
He was honored at Laredo
AFB. Tex., where he now
serves with a unit of the Air
Training Command.
The sergeant is a 1968
graduate of Hawk Eye High

Bucks Place Second
To Hamlet In Meet
The Bucks trackmen took
second behind Hamlet at a lour
? school meet last Thursday at
Bowman.
Hamlet was high with 93Vi
points to Hoke's 69. Bowman
was third with 46V4 and
Pembroke was fourth with 16.
Charles Crowder was high
scorer for Hoke, running on
the Buck's winning mile relay
team and placing second in the
mile run.
Bridges Hollingsworth took
the high jump for Hoke with a
5 ft. Il4i inch leap to break
the school record set by
Richard McNeill.
A freshman runner, Ronnie
Harris, handled varsity

Bill Lentz is the only Hoke
High golfer to place among the
top twenty players in the
Southeastern 3-A Conference.
Lent/ was fifth place on a
list of individual standings
compiled following the natch
with Rockingham last week.
He shot an 8 2 at
Rockingham and a 77 at Hoke
for an average of 159. The
leading golfer, Jeff Fleishman
of Lumberton, shot a 76 and a
73 for an average of 149.
Jackie Hanna of Bowman, who
ranks 20th in the individual
standings, has an average of
173.
Hoke is in last place in the
team standings. Lumberton
leads the conference with
Rockingham in second place.
The other placings in the
conference are Sanford, third;
Scotland, fourth; Pinecrest,
fifth and Hoke, sixth.

Hoke Girls Take
Five School Meet
Moke girls topped teams
from four other schools to win
a track meet held here on
March 31.
The Lady Bucks scored 79V4
to second place Union Pines'
51V4. East Montgomery was
third with 21Vi and Scotland
was fourth with 24V4. North
Moore was fifth with 23.
Hoke girls took the 880 yard
relay, the 440 yard relay, the
high jump, broad jump and the
880 yard run, the 220 yard
dash, and the Softball throw.
Debbie Little, Barbara Lidc,
Gloria Carthens, Linda Davis
and Queen Hollingsworth all
captured first place honors.
Little won the high jump
and raced on both winning
relay teams. Lide placed first in
the 220 yard dash and was a
member of both relay teams.
Davis took the 880 yard run
and Carthens won the broad
jump and raced on the 440
yard relay team. Hollingsworth
won the softball throw.
The next girls meet will be
held here April 21.

SUPERIOR - Jane Barnes,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julian
Barnes of Rock fish was one of
six pianists to receive a
superior rating at the NC Music
Teachers Association State
Piano Contest in Greensboro
Saturday. Jane competed
against 27 other students who
has previously received a
superior rating in one of the
nine district contest in March.
A total of 622 students
competed at the district level.
A junior at Hoke High, this is
the second consecutive year
that Jane has participated in
the state finals. She is a student
of Mrs. Frances M. McMilan of
Vardell Hall music department.

heard remarks from the
Atlantic Coast Conference
Coach of the Year at the Sixth
Annual Coastal Plains Sport
Awards Banquet at Myrtle
Beach last Saturday evening.
Don Williamson, David
Wood and their parents
attended the awards banquet
from Racford. The boys were
presented plaques honoring
them as members of the all-star
North Carolina football team.
Williamson was named as a
guard and Wood was chosen as
a back on the offensive team.
Coach Cal Stoll of Wake
Forest University spoke to an
audience of approximately 550
persons gathered from North
and South Carolina for the
banquet at the Myrtle Beach
Convention Center.

football coach Frank Howard,
University of South Carolina
quarterback Tommy Suggs and
Tar Heel flanker Tony
Blanchard handed out awards
to 67 outstanding athletes,
coaches and officials.
Some 200 coaches in the
two Carolina were polled to
select the award winners for
the banquet sponsored by the
Coastal Carolina Coca Cola
Bottlers, in conjunction with
WBTW-TV of Florence.
Most Valuable Player awards
were presented to Charles
Waddell of Pinecrest and Allen
Floyd of Mull ins High School,
Mullins, S.C. in basketball.
Football MVP awards went to
Freddie Solomon of Sunipter,
S.C. and Eddie Stephens of
Elizabethtown.
