CLUB HOUSE - This old post on, brought in by Norman Maxwell of Aberdeen, shows one of the early buildings at McCain Sanitarium. A . check with long-time employee Harold Satterwhite and former employee Mrs. Sue Satterwhlte failed to locate the old building, which was probably torn down tithe early 1920's, but Joe Lennon, hospital administrator, found an account of the club house in a history of the sanatorium by Mrs. PJ>. McCain. The Club House was one of six original buildings begun about 1908 and was used for staff recreational purposes. Later it housed doctors' offices, laboratory and a post office. Finally it was torn down and a formal rose garden was placed there and now the site is a parking lot. Shown in the background are two buildings believed to be open air cottages for amouutory portents, l ne water tower roof may be seen directly behind the Club House. Young and Dtvid Bodenheimer Since the use of mercury has been discontinued it will be necessary to use other materials for seed treatment of small grain in 1971. Vitavax is cleared for use on seed that is being grown for seed production. Four ounces per 100 pound of seed is sufficient to control smut and barley stripe. Vitavax is not cleared for regular crop production. A combination material Captan 37.5 Maneb 37.5 is labeled at 2 to 4 ounces per bushel of seed for oats, wheat and barley. It can be used as a dust or a slurry treatment and will protect seed and seedlings against seed - borne or soil ? borne diseases such as damping off, root rot, seed decay and seedling blight. Other formulations are also available. Mr. J.C. Wells, Extension Professor of Plant Pathology says he has seen a great deal of Glume blotch on wheat this year. It is most noticeable on the heads. Diseased heads are characterized by irregular chocolate ? brown spots, sprinkled with tiny black dots which are the fruiting structure of the fungus. Heavily infected heads are dwarfed and have shiveled kernels. Leaves and stems are also affected. The fungus over - seasons on wheat chaff and straw and on the surface of the seed. Consequently, special attention should be given to seed treatment and crop rotation for the next crop. Surveys in many corn producing counties indicate that nematodes are causing substantial losses in corn production. It also indicates that nematode pests of corn may be more widespread than originally thought. Plants attached by nematodes frequently appear stunted and typically have reduced secondary root systems. Severely infected plants have brown, discolored root systems. Some fields have been found in Hoke County and the ones that have been checked were infected with stubby root nematodes. We must begin to practice better rotations or crops or they might become a major problem. Late June and July are good months to make cuttings of plants to root. The cuttings should be from 3 to 6 inches long from the new growth. You should remove the leaves from the lower V* of the cuttings. Rooting media can be clean sand, vermiculite, perlitc or mixtures of sand and peat moss. Plants can be treated with a rooting harmone and placed in the media. They should be kept damp, but not soggy wet. They should be kept in the shade until roots becomc established. Hoke Students Go To Choral Workshop A group of Hoke County singers participated last week in the 19th Senior High School Choral Workshop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lara Hoggard, William Rand Kenan Professor of Music at UNC, is conductor of the workshop. Through the study of a variety of choral materials, the students learned advanced musical concepts from a master artist ? teacher as well as repertory and program ideas for the next school year. Students from Hoke High were Barbara Plummer, Becky Plummer, Betsy Pratt, Miriam Ropp, James Sellars, Linda Kaye Teal, John Watson, Jr., William E. Woods, Mary Dawn Parks, Caroline Niven, Cynthia McNeill, Kim Jordan, Allan Inman, Linda Hendren, Edison Glover, Lee GiUis, David Dombkowski, Ginger Davii, Chuck Davis, Evelyn Brown, Martin Best, Jane Barnes, Linda Barfield, Sally Austin and Mrs. Mary Archie McNcill, teacher. American colleges and universities are making special effort to attract returning servicemen ? in some cases high school dropouts. Veterans interested in obtaining information on. the schools should write their nearest VA office or the Veterans Administration (212), WaAinfton, D.C. 20420.
