$261,000 Spent On New Babies In Hoke Countv
(Special to The News-Journal)
NEW YORK. Sept. 11 ?
Hoke County produced i
bumper crop of babies in th<
past ten years, the Censu:
Bureau's figures show,
Despite the fact that th<
birth rate was tapering ofl
during the first half of the 60's
babies have been arriving or
the local scene in considerable
number since then.
According to th<
government report, a total ol
3,725 babies were born to local
residents between 1960 and
1970. This is exclusive of the
number born in the county to
non - residents.
Related to Hoke County's
median population during the
ten ? year period, this was
equivalent to an average annual
birth rate of 20.9 per 1.00C
people.
Elsewhere in the United
States, the average rate was
19.9 per 1,000 population. In
the South Atlantic States it
was 20.4 and, in the State ot
North Carolina, 20.7.
throughout the nation as a
whole, a total of 3^.033,000
births was recorded in the
decade. In North Carolina,
there were 1.032.000.
Each of the 3.725 babies
born to parents in the local
area signalled its arrival with a
loud clamor for food, clothing,
shelter and attention to its
various other needs.
Ready to satisfy their special
wants, then and now, are a
whole group of service
businesses and retail stores in
the local area.
Available through them are
layettes, bassinettes, babv
torvH
toiletries, diaper service,
nursery kits and a host of other
items.
Just how much is purchased
from them in equipping each
new child varies widely from
family to family and from area
to area across the country.
According to the latest
figures released by the Health
Insurance Institute, the average
outlay per baby, exclusive of
medical and hospital
expenditures, is about $700,
and $517 of it for baby clothes
and equipment and the rest for
maternity clothes.
This amount would be
reduced by gifts from relatives
and friends and by articles, if
available, used by an earlier
child.
I
Applying tlus average cost to
Hoke County's annual baby
crop, it takes about $261.000 a
year to provide these arrivals
with the necessary supplies and
equipment.
