ma Telephone Pays
,272 in Local Taxes
ciidllna Telephone's Hoke
County taxes for 1971
amounted to 519,072, one of
the largest assessments in the
county.
Glenn Daughtridge, local
manager, said that the tax
% payment covered ad valorem
,? taxes on the company's
,(/ property located within the
y county.
A check of county records
indicated that Carolina
Telephone ranks among the
. top taxpayers in the area it
serves.
According lo Deughtridge,
municipal ad valorem taxes
were also paid to Raeford.
These taxea exceeded $5,200.
County and municipal 1971
taxes paid by the company in
its 40 ? county operating area
totaled over S3,l 62,500.
Carolina Telephone's entire
operating tax bill for 1971,
including all state and federal
taxes, is expected to come to
more than 520,000,000.
Daughtridge pointed out
that this did not include an
estimated $6,800,000 in 10
percent federal excise taxes
which were billed to telephone
users by the company. These
taxes are remitted to the
federal government upon
collection.
Mrs.Wade Mortgage Supervisor
Mrs. Jean Wade of the
installment loan department of
Southern National Bank in
Raeford recently has been
designated mortgage loan
supervisor. Mrs. Wade recently
completed an extensive five ?
day training course in the
mortgage loan department at
the home office of Southern
National in Lumberton. During
the training period, Mrs. Wade
was familiarized with all the
mortgage lending activities of
Southern National Bank.
Although Southern National
has handled FHA, VA and
FHA-235 loans for quite some
time, the bank has just recently
begun handling the
conventional type mortgage
loans. This recent change in
bank service has dictated an
extensive retraining program
among its mortgage loan
officers.
With the training of Mrs.
Wade and the additional
mortgage services now being
offered by Southern National
Bank, the bank will be better
able to provide all types of
mortgage financing. Southern
National is now able to handle
MRS. JEAN WADE
financing ranging from single
family residences to large
commercial properties in the
Raefordarea.

This Is
The Law
Allen on April 15 onlly
agreed to tell hit horte to
Baxter on M?y 15 for $300.
The horte it worth on the
market $500. On May I Baxter
orally told to Collint
for $50 hit rights under the
contract. Collins tendered
$300 to Allen on May 15. but
Allen refuted to deliver the
horse to him. Allen contended
that he had made no contract
with Collins, that his contract
was with Baxter, and that he
did not want anyone other
than Baxter to own his horse.
May Collins recover from Allen
for breach of contract?
Yes. Allen cannot refuse to
deliver the horse to Collins,
upon tender of the agreed
purchase price, on the ground
that he has entered into no
contractual relation with
Collins. It should make no
difference to him as to who
pays the $300 and gets the
horse.
Allen will not be permitted
to say that he would not have
sold this horse had he known
anyone other than Baxter was
to become the horse's owner.
If Baxter can dispose ot the
horse to anyone he chooses
immediately after himself
performing the contract, there
is no serious objection to his
selling or giving to Collins this
right prior to the performance
of the contract.
An assignmnet of the
contract has occurred. An
assignment takes place when a
party transfers all of his rights
or interests in a contract to one
who is not a party to the
original undertaking. The party
making the assignment is
known as the "assignor": the
one to whom the right is
transferred is called the
"assignee."
The assignee steps into the
shoes of the assignor and
acquires all of the rights and
privileges of the latter. The
assignee can enforce the
contract against the remaining
original party to the contract.
* ? ?
What is the amount of
damages that Collins can
recover from Allen for breach
of contract?
$200. The difference
between tlw agreed contract
price and Me marWt price of
the horse. J6
